COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The University of Maryland baseball team was unable to overcome a strong pitching performance from James Madison Wednesday night, recording just five hits and falling to the Dukes 8-3.
The Terrapins took a 1-0 lead in the first when Matt Marquis drove in Alfredo Rodriguez, but were shut down over the next six innings.
James Madison (21-19) broke the game open in the fourth inning, picking up three runs off of Maryland reliever Eric Potter to take a 4-1 lead.
The Dukes added single runs in the fifth and seventh and two in the eighth to take a comfortable 8-1 lead.
Maryland's attempt at a rally was stymied by a strong performance by the Dukes pitchers. James Madison allowed just one Terrapin hit in the first six innings.
The Terps finally broke through and added runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings to cut into the deficit, but were unable to complete a comeback.
Josh Futter (2-0), who allowed two runs on four hits, was credited with the win for the Dukes. Futter struck out four and walked two in 5 2/3 innings of relief.
Potter took the loss for Maryland (15-30), dropping him to 2-8 on the year. In an inning of relief, Potter gave up three runs on four hits, struck out two and walked one.
The Terrapins will hit the road this weekend for a three-game series against No. 16 Miami. Friday and Saturday's games against the Hurricanes in Coral Gables, Fla. will begin at 7 p.m., while Sunday's game will start at noon.
