Berend Weijs, a 6-foot-10 power forward from Harcum (Pa.) College, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at the University of Maryland, head coach Gary Williams announced Thursday.
Weijs, who will have two seasons of eligibility with Maryland, averaged 6.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.4 blocks per game for the Bears, who finished 26-3 this season. His 119 blocks set a school record at Harcum, which is located in Bryn Mawr, Pa.
He becomes the sixth men's basketball recruit the Terps will add for the 2010-11 season.
Weijs joins Pe'Shon Howard (6-3, SG, Mouth of Wilson, Va.), Ashton Pankey (6-9, PF, Bronx, N.Y.), Haukur Palsson (6-6, SF, Montverde, Fla.), Mychal Parker (6-6, SF, Crozet, Va.) and Terrell Stoglin (6-1, PG, Tucson, Ariz.) in this recruiting class.
The Maryland recruiting class was recently ranked 21st in the nation by ESPN.com.

Set a school record with 119 blocked shots in 27 games for Harcum, which spent some time ranked No. 1 in the nation in the NJCAA rankings... Averaged 6.1 points and 5.6 rebounds as a sophomore, leading the team in rebounds and blocks... Played in 21 games for Harcum as a freshman... Played high school basketball at Ichthus in the Netherlands... Junior college coach was Drew Kelly.
Williams on Weijs: "Berend is a 6-10 very agile and mobile post player. With his size, skill and athleticism he will be able to contribute to our team immediately. He played on a very good junior college team and for a very good coach. We are extremely excited about Berend joining our program."
