WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
Brett Harman gave Maryland another quality start, pitching six innings and striking out 10, and the Terrapin offense scored four of its five runs in the first two innings en route to a 5-1 victory over Wake Forest Thursday evening.
Harman reached double-digit strikeouts in a game for the third time this season - he also had 10 against Miami on April 30 and a career-high 12 against Boston College on April 11 - and reliever Adam Kolarek shut down the Wake Forest offense over the final three innings to earn his first save of the season.
The Terps forged a two-out rally in the first inning to take a lead they wouldn't surrender. After Brandon Padula was hit by a pitch, Gary Schneider doubled down the left-field line, giving Maryland runners on second and third.
David Poutier followed with a two-run single to left center, giving the Terps a 2-0 lead.
Maryland (17-37, 5-23 ACC) added two more in the second. Designated hitter Tyler Bennett, who last year hit four home runs in the series vs. Wake, led off the inning with a single and later scored when Alfredo Rodriguez reached on a throwing error by Wake Forest shortstop Pat Blair.
Matt Marquis and Padula followed with consecutive singles to score Rodriguez as Maryland increased its lead to 4-0.
That would be more than enough run support for Harman (5-8), who struck out the side in the third and the fifth.
Kolarek was just as good in relief, allowing just one base runner in three innings of work.
Austin Stadler (3-4), who went seven innings and gave up five runs on eight hits, suffered the loss for Wake Forest, which dropped to 16-37 and 6-22 in the ACC.
Rodriguez and Poutier contributed two-hit games for the Terps. Rodriguez and Schneider extended their hitting streaks to nine games apiece.
Maryland and Wake Forest play game two of the three-game set Friday at 6 p.m.
