Maryland newcomers Jon Hill and Amina Smith made the most of their Terrapin debuts on Saturday by winning the high jump competitions at the Nittany Lion Challenge indoor track and field meet.

Hill, a sophomore transfer from the University of Texas, cleared 7 feet, 0.25 inches to win the men's high jump. He became only the 10th Terrapin to clear 7 feet indoors and his mark ranks eighth all-time at Maryland. He outlasted Sean Reilly of Penn State (6-10.25) for the victory.

Smith, a freshman from Lusby, Md., went 5-9.25 to win the women's competition. She leapt into fifth place on Maryland's all-time list indoors. All-American Kiani Profit was second at 5-7, while Lucile Cancre had a collegiate-best 5-5 mark to tie for seventh in the meet and tie for ninth all-time at Maryland.

Sophomore Taylor Bumpas also earned a victory for Maryland, capturing the women's 800 meters. Bumpas ran 2:13.22 to win, coming within a second of her career-best in her first meet of the year. She beat Jonelle White of Albany by nearly six seconds on Saturday for the win.

Sophomore Moriah Young and senior Kristen Batts both had breakthrough efforts in the women's 20-pound weight throw. Young added just under three feet to her PR with a second-place mark of 57-9, while Batts also went more than two feet over her previous best to finish third at 56-2.50. Young's mark moved her into fifth all-time at Maryland, just two places ahead of Batts.

Also highlighting performances for Maryland on Saturday were junior Ashley Cromartie, whose fifth-place finish of 2:52.29 at 1,000 meters ranks fourth all-time at Maryland. Profit finished second in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.47.

On the men's side, Maryland's distance medley relay team finished second in 10:21.82, with Kyle Gaffney, Calvin Wheeler, Sean O'Leary and Craig Morgan) taking the baton in that one. Jarenn Stewart finished third in the men's long jump at 22-5.25 after placing ninth at 60 meters in 6.94 seconds.
