BALTIMORE - Five University of Maryland men's lacrosse seniors were selected in the 2011 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Collegiate Draft. Long pole Brian Farrell was the highest pick, being selected with the 12th overall selection by the Boston Cannons.

Defenseman Brett Schmidt was the next Terp taken, going 15th overall to the Denver Outlaws. Midfielder Dan Burns went 19th overall by the Hamilton Nationals, while attackmen Grant Catalino and Ryan Young went with the 21st and 23rd picks, respectively, to Denver and the Long Island Lizards.

Farrell was a second team All-American after being a dominant force on both ends of the field for the Terps in 2010. Defensively, he finishing the season second on the team in groundballs (53) and caused turnovers (26). On the offensive side for the field Farrell finished with 12 points, which was 10th-best on the team, on six goals and six assists, which was the fifth-most on the squad. For his career Farrell now has 35 points on 21 goals and 14 assists, 133 groundballs and 66 caused turnovers. Farrell is a honorable mention preseason All-America in 2011.

Brett Schmidt was a third team USILA All-American and a LaxPower All-American after his breakthrough junior season. A shut-down defender for the majority of last year, Schmidt led the Terps with 28 caused turnovers and finished tied for fifth on the team with 36 groundballs. Schmidt helped lead a Terrapin defense that finished the season ranked first in caused turnovers per game in the NCAA (11.38) and seventh in groundballs per game (36.06). He is a second team preseason All-American entering the 2011 season

Dan Burns is widely considered one of the top pure athletes in college lacrosse and has been both a lock-down short-stick defensive middie and a dynamic offensive midfielder. After missing the first two games of the 2010 season, Burns helped solidify the defensive midfield for the Terps before moving into an offensive role. He finished the season with seven points on two goals and five assists, but also contributed 28 groundballs and six caused turnovers.

Catalino led the Terps in goals (34) and points (54) in 2010 and earned third team All-America honors. He finished his third season as a Terp with the fourth-best point total in his first three seasons since freshman records were first kept in 1970 with 143 points. That total ranks Catalino 21st on the career points list at Maryland, while his 88 career goals ties him for 15th on that all-time list. Catalino's 54 points were the most by a Terrapin player since 2006. Catalino is a first team preseason All-American entering 2011.

Young was an honorable mention All-American last season after leading the team with 30 assists, the first time any Terp has reached that mark since 2006. Last season, Young was ninth in the NCAA in assists per game (1.88). He finished second on the team in points with 48 and was third on the team with 18 goals. Young also led all Terp offensive players with 37 groundballs.

Maryland's five picks were the second-most of any school, trailing only Syracuse, which had seven seniors taken. The five picks were the most for the Terps since four Maryland players were taken in 2007. Four Terrapins were also taken in the 2006 MLL Draft.
