COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Terps continued their impressive start Saturday afternoon posting a 7-0 win over the visiting Syracuse Orangemen (1-1, 0-0 Big East).
The newcomers once again shined for Maryland (2-0, 0-0 ACC). True freshman Jordaan Sanford's 6-2, 6-4 victory over Alessondra Parra at No. 1 singles clinched the match for the Terps after junior transfer Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar got the Terps off to a solid start in singles. Sanchez-Quintanar easily defeated the Orangemen's Emily Harman at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-2.
Junior Jordan Hansbrough also made easy work at No. 5 singles knocking off Syracuse's Christina Tan 6-3, 6-0.
A second straight doubles sweep gave the Terps an early advantage which they never let go. Hansbrough and partner Julia Huschke battled back from down 4-1 to defeat Maddie Kobelt and Aleah Marrow at No. 2 doubles for the sweep.
"Today's match really revealed the character of our team," said head coach Howard Joffe. "We fought back from a deficit in doubles, and then didn't let up."
Newcomer Welma Luus, who just joined the team recently, has already needed to adjust to a role in the starting lineup. After dropping the first set 1-6, Luus bounced back winning the next two sets 6-0, 6-4 to defeat Eva Raszkiewicz.
"[I was] a bit nervous in the first set, I didn't play well. But I got it together in the second set," said Luus.
After back-to-back convincing home wins to start the season, the Terps travel to in-state foe UMBC Sunday for a 6 p.m. matchup against the Retrievers.
