Postgame Quotes - Maryland vs. Colgate

Maryland Coach Gary Williams

Opening statement:
"I was very pleased with the defensive effort tonight. I think one of the things good teams do is that they don't try to judge how hard you have to play. You try to play the same way on the court, every time you play. Offensively, I thought we played unselfishly, and had some of the guys making really good extra passes. That's how you shoot a good percentage and we did that tonight. It was good for us to play that way this week, and hopefully we can have good practices leading up to Sunday's game."

On Stoglin starting:
"What Terrell does is that he shows a lot of energy early on. He's not perfect at what he does but he does bring energy to the table. I think he handled it well and got us going."

On team depth:
"Depth is good if they can play, depth doesn't mean anything if you just have bodies. Duke has always been able to play with what they had. Going back to some great teams, they can play with only seven players. If you're in good enough shape and you have good enough players, it doesn't matter whether you have seven or 10 players. We have guys that can play and some guys that can earn some minutes. Especially on the road, you can have guys that can have trouble getting off to a good start, it's hard to pull these guys out and put others in."

On the effort:
"I liked the effort tonight; it has been the effort we've been practicing. We've been able to take what we've been doing in practice and put it in the game tonight. It wasn't the hard part, obviously we had better players than Colgate did, so most of the time like that we win. Soon we'll be going up against players as good as your players and same size as your players. But what we have is that we know how we played against Illinois, Pittsburgh and Boston College, all 3-point games. Having these things that we've done this year and we didn't win, so we're never satisfied. At least we knew early on that if we continue to work hard, we have the ability to beat people at that level. We'll see if we're at that level coming up."

On team performance without Jordan Williams:
"I try to always focus on our defense in terms of rebounds and scoring without Jordan. I look at the defensive end and I think that both Berend and Dino were pretty good defensively tonight. Obviously it will be different players on Sunday but that's what you want, to see if they'll work hard on defense, and both of these guys did a good job. We have been preparing ourselves the past three weeks for things that may come up the next two months, we'll see if we've done a good enough job."

Sophomore Forward Jordan Williams

On the balanced scoring:
"Coach Williams has emphasized the past couple of days in practice making the extra pass. I think we did a great job tonight doing that and not being selfish and worrying about who is going to score. We also did a good job getting excited off of the small things, a charge, a blocked shot, a steal or a rebound. Just getting excited off of things like that and making the game more fun and I think we did a great job doing that tonight."

On the fast start:
"We had them down 22-2 at one point and we were killing them. That is great to know that our team can start off that well because we are going to need that Sunday in Durham. We need to come out because the No. 1 team in the country isn't going to slack off at all. We have to keep pushing and start off the game like we did today, scoring and playing defense and trusting each other. If we do that we can surprise a lot of teams."

On the team contesting shots:
"Flying to every shot is very important. That is another thing that Coach Williams emphasized is to fly to every shot, talking on defense, and being active on and off the ball defensively, and we did a great job doing that tonight."

On what is impressive in the Maryland vs. Duke rivalry:
"The atmosphere, it is an unbelievable atmosphere and a huge dream. It's every little kid who grew up watching college basketball's dream. This is my first time that I have played against the No. 1 team in the country. It's exciting for me. Duke is a great team but we are as well and I think we are going to shock a lot of people."

Senior Forward Dino Gregory

On the team's success against top ranked teams:
"We talked about it already, we have beaten a No. 1 team seven times already and we want to make in eight on Sunday night."

On Duke:
"They are an extremely good team; we saw them play against Miami and they play UAB tomorrow night. We are excited about the challenge. They have big guys and Nolan Smith and Kyle Singler and they are a load to handle but it's exciting and going to be a challenge."

On the Duke rivalry:
"I mean as a fan if you love Maryland you want to be able to beat Duke in every sport especially basketball. Growing up I loved beating those guys and now I am part of that tradition and is basically a dream come true."

Senior Guard Adrian Bowie

On Terrell Stoglin:
"He does a little bit of everything and makes us a lot more balanced. He can score, I can score Sean (Mosley) can score and it makes us more potent offensively"

On being the last team to beat Duke:
"We have talked about it all the time and on Sunday we want to be the next team to beat them again and hopefully we can make that happen."

On Duke:
"They are a great team and their defense is just as good as their offense. They spread the court and have great players, Nolan (Smith), Kyle (Singler) and Mason Plumlee has come into his own this year. They are a great team but they can be beat."

Senior Guard/Forward Cliff Tucker

On the quick start:
"It was real important to come in and win this game decisively. We didn't want to come out sluggish and have to have Coach Williams worry about this game. We know who we are playing next and have been preparing for Duke so we came in and played as if we were playing Duke. We did a good job today and we have some things to work on this week and we will be ready to play on Sunday."

On what the team has accomplished so far:
"I think unlike the last few years we haven't lost to a team that we are supposed to beat so we accomplished that goal. I think we are ready to compete and hopefully win the ACC Championship."

Colgate Head Coach Emmett Davis

Opening statement:
"We just ran into a team tonight that was really focused. They played extremely hard. They hurt us in transition and they hurt us in every aspect of the game. I felt like our guys didn't execute our game plan. We didn't play with the intensity we needed to for any second of the game and our shot selection wasn't great. We didn't turn the ball over which was a positive like we have been in some games, but we didn't do a great job of executing and then defensively I thought they got whatever they wanted."

On his team's slow start:
"I think we missed some shots early, we took some bad shots. Our game plan was certainly not to get into a running affair with Maryland and I thought we took too many quick shots early in the game and they turned into transition opportunities for them. The rebounding is a big part of the story."

On how he thought his team could exploit Maryland heading into the game:
"I think they're a solid team. We felt like if we could break their pressure there might be an opportunity to score before they got in their match - their man-to-man defense. We wanted to play inside out, get the ball posted, get movement, and then also attack ball screens a little bit. I thought we did a pretty good job of that in the second half at times, but just very inconsistent."

On moving forward:
"Well we had played three pretty good games and this is really a disappointing loss, but we've got to throw this tape in the trash and move on. We won't play any more teams like Maryland until postseason if we're fortunate enough to get there. So we have to get in there and Patriot League play starts this weekend so we're going to get ready for that."
