Storyline
Maryland begins arguably the toughest week-long road stretch in 20 years by traveling to top-ranked Duke for a nationally televised Sunday night game. The Terrapins are facing three straight road games (at Duke, at Wake on Wed., at Villanova on Sat.) for the first time since playing at Georgia Tech, Clemson and Duke in early February 1991.
The Terrapins are second all-time nationally in the number of wins over a No. 1 opponent. North Carolina has knocked off a top-ranked team 12 times, with Maryland and UCLA having done it 10 times. Maryland's last victory over a No. 1 team was on 1/19/2008 in an 82-80 win at North Carolina.
Maryland ranks second in the Atlantic Coast Conference in the number of league victories in the last 12 years. With 120 wins since 1999, Maryland is second among all ACC schools in regular-season conference wins, behind only Duke (151) and one ahead of North Carolina.
Sophomore center Jordan Williams continues to have one of the best seasons in Terrapin history. He had 12 points and 11 rebounds in Maryland's last outing against Colgate. It was his 12th double-double of the season and the eighth straight. Williams' streak surpassed the seven straight of Joe Smith in the 1994-95 season and is short only of the 12 straight double-doubles posted by current ESPN analyst Len Elmore in the 1973-74 season.
Senior guard Adrian Bowie has been hot of late, picking up his scoring pace. Bowie is averaging 11.8 ppg over the last five games, hitting .588 from the floor and .500 from 3-point range (8 of 16). He is hitting .917 from the free-throw line this season.
Scouting the Blue Devils
Duke is the unanimous choice as the No. 1 team in the nation in both rankings... The defending national champions have won 24 straight games, with their last loss being a 79-72 defeat in Comcast Center on 3/3/2010... They swept through their final 10 games of last season en route to the title and now come in as one of seven teams nationally that remain unbeaten (through Thursday's games)...
Nolan Smith is Duke's leading scorer and the top scorer in the Atlantic Coast Conference, averaging 19.6 ppg... He also leads the league in assists at 5.6 per game...
Kyle Singler (17.4 ppg, 5.9 ppg) is living up to preseason expectations, while Andre Dawkins (11.9 ppg) is hitting 58 percent from the floor and leads Duke with 35 3-pointers (.538 behind the arc)...
Mason Plumlee is Duke's leading rebounder at 7.7 boards per game and has blocked a team-best 23 shots...
Eight different Duke players have at least one start, while the Blue Devils are shooting a stellar .501 from the floor and .438 from 3-point range.
Upcoming
The Terps play their first road game of the new year on Jan. 9 at top-ranked Duke, travel to Wake Forest for a matchup on 1/12 and finish the week at Villanova on 1/15.
It will mark the first time Maryland has had three consecutive road games since the 1990-91 season... The Terps played at Georgia Tech (2/1/1991), at Clemson (2/6/91) and at Duke (2/9/91) late in the year.
Maryland's next home game is on Thursday, Jan. 20 against Virginia Tech.
