Opening statement:
"That was a good win for us. Believe it or not, we got a lot better this week, from Sunday till today. [Northwood is] a heck of a team. I tried to get out of the game; I couldn't get out of it, Rollie [Massimino] wouldn't let me out of the game. Thirty-three and four last year, they know how to win. We don't really know how to win, and it showed at times. They think their team is better than last year's, so we knew it was going to be tough.
"We played most of the second half without Nick [Faust], who was our best player up to that point; he was our best defender up to that point. And then they got Jon [Dunn] going, and that kid was phenomenal in the second half, and we didn't have an answer.
"We were doing some unorthodox things that we won't normally do. We were switching screens and our guys just weren't any good at it. I don't like giving up this many points, but when the game was on the line, Terrell [Stoglin] made some tough shots and we got some stops when we had to and got away. We got better this week; that's what's important."
On freshman guard Nick Faust:
"Quite frankly, he wasn't very good offensively until he had the desperation 3 and then he hit the long one before the half. He was 1-for-5 going into those two shots. Then he got going in the second half. Either a kid has it or he doesn't - Nick's got it. I think we all can see that just in his first game. He's got it; he's going to be great. Poor kid, he's playing back-up point guard, in practice back-up point guard until a week ago. A lot's going through his head right now, and I'm still figuring out a way to coach this team offensively so we can have enough intensity on defense to guard better."
On the team's play:
"We're just not very good with the basketball. Guys aren't very good; the decision-making isn't very good. They get going too quickly. I can go on and on. Our shot selection was actually better tonight. It wasn't great, but it was better. So we're making some headway. Our turnovers were just ridiculous. At some point I was like, `I can't help you guys. I can't dribble for you, I can't catch it for you.'"
On sophomore guard Terrell Stoglin:
"He just tries to do too much. Terrell just tries to do too much. One-on-threes, one-on-fours: whenever he has to take seven or eight dribbles to get a shot, it's probably not a good thing for everybody concerned. We're just trying to get that corrected. He was much better today than he was in our first scrimmage. Terrell made two big plays for us. We've got guys that when things aren't going well, they go in five different directions, and I'm trying to correct that. Hopefully we can correct it by next Sunday."
On changes made going into the season:
"I changed my shot just a little bit over the summer but I'm not thinking, I'm just going out there and playing basketball. This really is my first game, that's how I think about it. It's just a matter of us, as a team, coming together and learning from the mistakes we had tonight and getting better tomorrow."
On it being a close game:
"I think college basketball is tough. They played pretty well tonight. We just have to protect our home court. It's just a matter of us learning from the mistakes we had late in the stretch; a couple turnovers, a couple of missed free throws in the second half. It's some of the little things that we need to work on. I think we're starting to get better as a team overall."
On freshman guard Nick Faust:
"He had the jitters at first. He came out and shot a couple of air balls but once the game continued to go on he felt a lot more comfortable with the offense and hit some amazing shots for us done the stretch. He gave us a boost going into halftime by hitting that shot at the buzzer. I'm just proud of him and him being coachable and allowed to play as a freshman."
On redshirt-freshman center Alex Len:
"He was so excited when he found out he could play today, he actually cried. It was a big moment for him. I was real proud of him today."
On improving defensively:
"It's all about watching game tapes tomorrow and getting better. We just have to protect the ball more. Guys are going to make mistakes. That's basketball."
Northwood Coach Rollie Massimino
On the game:
"I thought that Maryland was a very, very well coached team. They've got shooters and they run some real good offensive sets to get themselves free. [They have] tough kids. I like the way Coach Turgeon rotated his group. I thought that we played really well down the stretch. Obviously, it's Maryland and it was their first game and our first game, so it was a fun experience for us and I really want to thank Coach [Turgeon] for the opportunity."
On his team's second-half run to get back in the game:
"Well, when we get the ball out and run then we're in pretty good shape, but we didn't do that in the beginning because [Maryland] wouldn't let us. They had 11 offensive rebounds and they made some big time shots - the one at the half and then the one right before the half. They hit two 3's that really, really hurt us."
On the play of Jonathan Dunn and Patrick Horstmann:
"They're both very good players and they work hard, but [Maryland] had very good players as well."
On what his team can take from this game:
"It's an exhibition for us and it's an exhibition for [Maryland]. We hope that we can learn a lot from this. We'll watch some film and see what happens."
