CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Despite some solid individual performances, the Maryland swimming and diving team ran up against a tough North Carolina unit at Koury Natatorium Saturday and was edged by the Tar Heels in ACC action.

The men's squad fell 180-119 and was led by sophomore John Hauser and freshman David Speese. Hauser won the 100 free (45.60) and took second and third in the 50 free (21.16) and 200 free (1:41.03), respectively. Speese swept the breaststroke events, capturing the 100 (57.73) and 200 (2:05.90).

Other top three finishers included Andrew Relihan in the 200 back (1:50.66) and 400 IM (4:06.23), Alex Spina in the 1000 free (9:41.31), Bradley Dillon in the 100 back (51.39), Anderson Sloan in the 100 breast (57.97), Sean Stewart in the 200 fly (1:51.93), Charlie Rommel in the 100 free (45.60), and Jeff Winters in the 100 fly (50.87).

Jack Clewlow had a very good day on the boards, taking second in the 3-meter (345.23) and third in the 1-meter (300.08).

The women's team dropped its first dual meet of the year, falling to the Tar Heels 178-121.

Maryland was paced by winning performances from Jennifer Roberts in the 200 fly (2:02.32), Ginny Glover in the 200 back (2:00.25) and Megan Lafferty in the 50 free (23.30).

Alisa Kurbatova captured the 1-meter dive (278.70) and took second in the 3-meter (293.93). Jessica Whelan followed Kurbatova in the 3-meter with a third place finish (279.45).

Maryland scooped numerous other top-three showings including second-place finishes courtesy of Carolyn Fittin (100 free - 51.28), Lafferty (100 fly - 55.56), Victoria Cassidy (400 IM - 4:22.84), Alexa Hamilton (200 breast - 2:18.92).

Glover (100 back - 56.55), Laura Flewelling (100 breast - 1:04.87), Addison Koelle (200 fly - 2:02.77), and Katie Hughes (200 back - 2:03.02) all racked up additional third place finishes.

The Terps finished on a high note, winning the 400 free relay with the team of Lafferty, Fittin, Julia Kudryashova, and Glover (3:26.13).

"We had a handful of good swims, which I'm pleased about, but UNC's depth caught up to us too much which was unfortunate," head coach Sean Schimmel said. "The nice swims we got and the victories we did get were positive. We learned a lot about things we need to do as we continue our preparations to ACCs and NCAAs."

Maryland returns to action next Saturday when it welcomes UMBC to Eppley Recreation Natatorium.
