Postgame notes following Maryland's 77-74 win over Mount St. Mary's Wednesday night at Comcast Center.
Tipping Off: Maryland improved to 5-3 on the season while Mount St. Mary's dropped to 1-7 ... the Terps improved to 7-0 all-time in the series ... it was the two teams' first meeting since 2006 ... Maryland is 20-2 in its last 22 non-conference home games.
Stoglin's Scoring Run: With Maryland trailing 68-67 and under four minutes left, Terrell Stoglin scored six straight points for the Terps, first hitting a runner in the lane then knocking down two jumpers, to give the Terps a 73-70 lead. Stoglin, who came into the game leading the ACC and ranking ninth nationally in scoring (22.4 ppg), finished just above his average with 23. He also added three assists and three rebounds. He's averaged 25.3 points over the last six games and gone over 20 in each of the last four.
Pankey Efficient: Ashton Pankey had an efficient night, matching a season-high with 13 points while adding five rebounds and a steal without committing a turnover in 20 minutes. Pankey had nine points in eight minutes of playing time in the first half.
Faust Steps Up: Nick Faust had made just 12 of 28 free throws coming into tonight's game, but the freshman connected on 6 of 6 against the Mount. He finished with 13 points and made two big plays down the stretch. With Maryland trailing 63-61, he hit a 3-pointer to give Maryland the lead. He also assisted on Ashton Pankey's basket and foul that gave Maryland a 67-65 lead with 5:13 left. Faust also had a career-best five assists and matched a career-high with six rebounds.
Padgett Provides Scoring Punch: James Padgett had another strong effort, reaching double figures in scoring for the fourth-straight game with 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting. His made field goals are a career high (previously six). He also tied for a team high with six boards.
3PT shooting: Mount St. Mary's was able to hang in the game thanks to great shooting from beyond the 3-point line. The Mountaineers connected on 11 of 21 long-range attempts, a season-high by a Maryland opponent. The previous high was seven (four times). The Mount made 52.4 percent of its attempts, also a season-high by a Maryland opponent (previously Alabama, .438).
MD first-half shooting: Maryland made 15 of 25 shots (60 percent) in the first half, the second-best percentage they've connected on this season. The best was 61.9 percent in the first half against Iona (11/20) ... the Terps assisted on eight of their 15 first-half baskets.
Tidbits: For the fourth straight game the Terps used a starting lineup of Sean Mosley, James Padgett, Berend Weijs, Nick Faust and Terrell Stoglin ... Mosley and Faust are the only Maryland players to start every game this season ... Maryland made more free throws than its opponent for the sixth time this season and the Terps are 5-1 in those games ... Maryland held a 22-8 edge in points in the paint during the first half and finished the game with a 36-22 advantage ... the Terps only committed two turnovers in the first half but had nine in the second half.
