COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Newcomers Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar and Ana Belzunce remained perfect in spring singles action enabling the Maryland women's tennis team to open its homestand with a convincing 5-2 win over Columbia on Friday.
Coming off a difficult 4-3 loss at Virginia Tech Saturday, the Terps (6-2), ranked 58th nationally, set the tone early against their non-conference foe by winning all three doubles pairings to get off to a 1-0 start in the first of three home matches this weekend.
Maryland needed just three singles matches to clinch a victory over Columbia (6-3) for the second straight season.
After Bezunce improved to 8-0 in dual singles by logging a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Bianca Sanon and Jordaan Sanford defeated Columbia's Natasha Makarova 6-0, 6-1, Sanchez-Quintanar gave the Terps four points with a convincing straight sets win (6-1, 6-4) over Nicole Bartnik at the No. 1 position.
Sanchez-Quintanar is also 8-0 dual singles matches. In addition, the junior has partnered with Sanford in doubles with the duo posting a perfect 8-0 mark this spring.
Julia Huschke had the Terps other singles win. Down 8-6 in the pro set tiebreaker, she rallied for 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (11-9) win over Chelsea Davis at No. 4 singles.
The Terrapins will play a pair of matches Saturday at the Tennis Center at College Park, entertaining California (Pa.) at 10 a.m. and Delaware at 3 p.m.
