COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Playing their third match in just over 24 hours the Terps showed no signs of fatigue easily handing Delaware 7-0 its first loss of the season just hours after defeating the University of California (Pa.) 6-1.
Maryland (8-2, 0-2 ACC) got solid performances across the board against both the California (Pa.) Vulcans (9-3) and the Delaware Blue Hens (3-1, 0-0 CAA).
Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar and Ana Belzunce remained perfect in singles this season while Sanchez-Quintanar and Jordaan Sanford kept their unbeaten streak alive Saturday as the team of Sanford and Sanchez-Quintanar and Belzunce improved to 10-0 in the dual season. Sanchez-Quintanar sat out the singles portion of the Terps match against the Vulcans but her 6-2, 6-0 win over Delaware's Megan Doran secured her 9-0 season record.
Sanford defeated Annabel Pieschl, the No. 20 ranked player in Division II, 6-1, 7-5 to get her eighth win of the season.
"It was a tough day for all of us since we had two matches in one day," said Sanford. "But we were able to pull it through."
Sophomore Burce Kurkan saw her first action of the spring Saturday afternoon, playing at No. 6 singles in Maryland's match against California (Pa.). She beat Nina Kowalski 6-4, 6-3 for her first win of the season.
The Terps lost only two sets all day, taking an impressive 22 of 24 sets on the day in singles and not losing a doubles match.
"Two matches in one day is something our girls haven't done," said head coach Howard Joffe. "We had a belly full of tennis and did a wonderful job and are now looking forward to a break."
Maryland gets a week long break before facing Princeton Saturday, March 5 in College Park at 11 a.m.
