Knocking off their third ranked opponent of the season, the No. 43 Terps downed No. 56 Princeton 5-2 Saturday afternoon in College Park.
Maryland (9-2, 0-2 ACC) improved to 3-0 against ranked opponents this season, and 4-0 against the Ivy League. Meanwhile Terps Cristina-Sanchez-Quintanar and Ana Belzunce maintained their perfect records in the dual season. Sanchez-Quintanar went to 10-0 with a 6-1, 7-6 (10-1) over Princeton's Hilary Bartlett at No. 1 singles which clinched the match for the Terps. Belzunce moved to 11-0 grabbing the final match of the day 6-4, 7-5 (10-1) over Rachel Saiontz at No. 2 singles.
The doubles team of Sanchez-Quintanar and Jordaan Sanford also improved to 11-0 in the dual season. The tandum beat the Tigers' Bartlett and Taylor Marable 8-2 at No. 1 doubles to get the Terps rolling.
Other Maryland winners included Sanford at No. 3 singles, Jordan Hansbrough at No. 6 singles, and Belzunce and Welma Luus at No. 3 doubles.
"I'm really pleased with how the team performed today," said Maryland assistant coach Dianne Matias. "All the matches were tough but our girls came out prepared for a hard fight and maintained a calm demeanor throughout their whole match."
The win over Princeton (5-6, 0-0 Ivy League) is Maryland's first win over a ranked opponent at home since February 3, 2007 when the Terps toppled No. 48 Ole Miss in their home opener.
"I'm so proud of the way everyone fought today," said Maryland senior Julia Huschke. "The girls from Princeton are fighters, so it was great that we were able to compete well and win. We are a young team and still have room to improve, but we are putting in the hard work and really looking forward to getting into the thick of our ACC season."
Maryland gets 10 days off before traveling to Virginia to take on the Richmond Spiders Tuesday, March 15 at 3 p.m. in Richmond.
