Storyline

Maryland steps away from league play for one last time in the 2010-11 regular season when it plays host to Longwood in a Wednesday night matchup. The Terrapins are 15-8 overall after having won four of their last five games. The Terps are also on pace to record at least 19 victories for the 15th consecutive season.

Maryland comes into the game with the Lancers with a 9-0 record in non-conference games at Comcast Center this season. The Terrapins beat Longwood, 106-55, in last year's matchup on Jan. 19, 2010. Including that game with the Lancers last year, the Terrapins have won 10 straight non-conference games at Comcast Center.

Tonight, Maryland head coach Gary Williams could earn his 665th victory overall, passing the 664 mark set by the legendary John Wooden. Williams, in his 33rd season as a head coach overall and his 22nd at Maryland, stands fifth on the all-time victories list among active coaches, and is one of only 12 to have reached the 600-win plateau. He is the winningest coach in Maryland history, now at 457-246.

In their last five games (Terps are 4-1), Maryland is averaging 74.4 points per game and is shooting well. The Terps are hitting .468 from the floor, including a sterling .410 mark from behind 3-point range. The Terps are also better at the free throw line over the last five games, hitting .714 at the stripe. Jordan Williams has four double-doubles in that stretch and is averaging team-bests of 17.7 points and 12.0 rebounds per game over the entire season.

Williams leads the nation in double-doubles with 20 this year, just two short of the 22 posted by Len Elmore in the 1974 season. Williams comes into tonight's game third in the nation in rebounding at 12.0 per game after his fifth 15-rebound effort of the year on Saturday against Wake Forest. Williams' 27 points against the Demon Deacons tied his career-high (12/12/10 vs. Boston College) and marked the first time a Terrapin has had three straight 20-point games since Greivis Vasquez accomplished that feat from 2/27 to 3/6 last season (41 at Virginia Tech, 20 vs. Duke, 23 at Virginia).

Freshman guard Pe'Shon Howard, who made his fourth start of the season Saturday against Wake Forest, has recorded 18 assists and only four turnovers in the past four games. His 1.85 assist-turnover ratio currently ranks ninth in the ACC. Speaking of the backcourt, senior Adrian Bowie is averaging 12.4 points per game in the last five outings.

Following tonight's game, Maryland has important road games at Boston College (Saturday) and at Virginia Tech (Tuesday, Feb. 15) before returning home on Sunday, Feb. 20 to face NC State.

Scouting the Lancers

Longwood is led by junior Antwan Carter, who is 6-foot-6 and listed as a center. Carter has 11 double-doubles this season and most recently had 29 points and 11 rebounds in a 65-64 loss at NJIT. Longwood comes into Wednesday's game having lost three straight and possessing an 8-18 record on the season. The Lancers are 0-13 on the road this season.

Carter has scored in double figures 24 times this season and has posted four straight 20-point games. He is the tallest player in the starting lineup for Longwood; four guards join the St. Petersburg, Fla., native. Aaron Mitchell, a 6-foot-2 senior, is second on the team in scoring (12.6 pg). Jeremiah Bowman leads the team in assists (4.2 pg) and also averages 12.1 ppg. Junior guards Martiz Washington (9.9 ppg) and Durann Neil (8.8 ppg) round out the starting lineup.

The Lancers are one of six Independent teams in Division I Basketball. This will be their sixth game of the season against a team from a "power" conference. Longwood is winless in those games so far, having played Kansas, Marquette, Seton Hall, Colorado and Virginia Tech.
