Storyline
Maryland opens the final week of the regular season with a road game at Miami. The Terrapins are tied for sixth place in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings, pending Boston College's game at Virginia Tech on Tuesday night. The Terps and Eagles are two games ahead of Miami in the league standings, with the Hurricans in a three-way tie for eighth with NC State and Virginia at 5-9.
Maryland is attempting to add to a string of 15 consecutive seasons with at least 19 wins. The last time the Terrapins failed to reach that plateau was a 17-13 record in 1995-96. The Terrapins are on an 18-season string with at least seven conference victories in a season.
For the second straight week, freshman guard Terrell Stoglin was named the ACC Rookie of the Week. He had team-high totals of 17 points against Florida State and 28 points at North Carolina. The 28-point outburst in Chapel Hill were the most in a single game by a Maryland player this season. Stoglin has raised his scoring average from 9.0 to 11.4 points per game over the last six games.
Sophomore center Jordan Williams equaled a single-season school record against the Tar Heels with his 22nd double-double of the year. Williams matched the total posted by Len Elmore in the 1973-74 season. Williams (11.8 rpg) is seeking to become the first Terrapin to lead the ACC in rebounding since Joe Smith topped the ACC chart with 10.7 rpg in 1993-94.
Maryland has been strong at the line of late. In their last nine games, the Terps have hit .765 at the line, including an .814 effort (79-for-97) in the last four outings.
Scouting the Hurricanes
Miami is 17-12 overall and 5-9 in the ACC after a 65-59 loss at Florida State on Saturday... The Hurricanes are at 10-4 in home games this season, though they have dropped two straight.
Junior Malcolm Grant and sophomore Durand Scott provide much of Miami's scoring bunch out of the backcourt... Grant averages 15.1 ppg, seventh best in the ACC, and leads the conference in 3PT field goal percentage (.441)... He also ranks third in FT percentage (.870)... Scott is 16th in the ACC with 13.2 ppg and has a team-high 36 steals.
Center Reggie Johnson, a 6-foot-10 sophomore, averages 12.2 ppg and gives Miami its third player ranked in the top 20 in the conference in scoring... The `Canes and Boston College are the only teams with three players in the top 20... Johnson leads the team in rebounding (9.4 pg).
Guard Garrius Adams and forward Adrian Thomas round out the starting lineup for Miami... Thomas is sixth in the conference in 3PT field goal percentage (.389) and, as a team, Miami is second in the conference (.381).
Stoglin's Scoring Surge
Freshman guard Terrell Stoglin is turning playing time into points late in the season for the Terrapins:
Stoglin earned back-to-back ACC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK honors the past two weeks... In his last four games, he is scoring 23.8 ppg, and has three games with at least 25 points... He had 28 against North Carolina (11-for-20 FG, 6-for-7 FT), the most by a Terrapin this season.
After posting back-to-back 25-point games at Virginia Tech, and vs. NC State, Stoglin is one of only six ACC players to accomplish that feat this season, according to D1scourse.com's Patrick Stevens (Reggie Jackson 2x, Nolan Smith 2x, Jeff Allen, Harrison Barnes, Iman Shumpert).
Stoglin is averaging 20.7 points and 5.5 assists per game in his last six outings... He scored in double figures in each of those games and has raised his scoring average from 9.0 to 11.4 ppg, moving into second on the team in scoring... In his last four games, Stoglin is 29-for-31 (.935) at the line.
In addition to his 25 points against the Wolfpack, Stoglin dished out 9 assists, the most by a Terrapin this season... He had those 9 assists with only 1 turnover against NC State and improved his single-game season-high in minutes from 28 to 34.
With his 10-for-10 effort at the line at Virginia Tech (2/15), Stoglin became the 18th Terrapin in history to have a perfect night at the line with at least 10 attempts.
He went 9-for-9 at the free throw line en route to 15 points in his collegiate debut... He added 14 points in 14 minutes against Maine and a game-high 17 points against #13 Illinois... Stoglin had all 10 of his points in the second half against Penn State as the Terps pulled away for a road win... 12 of his 16 points vs. Temple came in the second half in a season-high 25 minutes (2-for-6 3FG)... He had 15 points in 18 minutes against Longwood and followed with 14 points and 7 assists at Boston College.
Stoglin is the second-leading scorer all-time among big schools in Arizona state high school history, behind only NBA star Mike Bibby.
