COLLEGE STATION, Texas -
Dwight Barbiasz cleared 7 feet, 2 1/2 inches to tie for fourth place in the men's high jump Saturday at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships being hosted by Texas A&M.
Barbiasz, a Terrapin junior, was one of seven competitors to clear 7-2 1/2 in the competition, but he earned the tie for fourth by virtue of fewer misses through the competition.
Indiana junior Derek Drouin cleared 7-7 3/4 to win the competition and set a new facility record. Ricky Robertson of Mississippi cleared 7-3 3/4 to place second. Those were the only two who cleared better than 7-2 1/2.
Barbiasz made his first attempt at 6-10 3/4, but needed two attempts to clear 7-0 1/2. He made 7-2 1/2 on his first try, but went out with seven other competitors at 7-3 3/4.
Erik Kynard of Kansas State was third, while Barbiasz tied with Geoff Davis of Purdue.
Barbiasz scored 4-1/2 team points for Maryland.
The Terrapins open their outdoor track and field season in two weeks.
