Storyline
Maryland closes its regular season with its annual Senior Day celebration and a matchup with border-state rival Virginia. The Terrapins beat Virginia, 66-42, in their earlier matchup with the Cavaliers on Jan. 27 in Charlottesville. The Terrapins held the Cavs to 33 percent shooting and 42 points in one of their best defensive efforts of the year. Adrian Bowie had 22 points to lead the Terps in the earlier meeting.
The Terrapins will honor the men's basketball senior class of 2011 in pregame ceremonies. Adrian Bowie, Dino Gregory and Cliff Tucker have combined for 82 victories so far in their four seasons. More important, all three are on track to graduate this spring.
Maryland comes into the final game of the regular season in seventh place in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings with a 7-8 conference record. Pending the outcome of games in the final weekend, the Terrapins could finish as high as a tie for fifth in the standings. Virginia is tied with Miami for eighth place in the league coming into the final game of the regular season.
Freshman guard Terrell Stoglin scored 20 points to lead the Terrapins in scoring Wednesday at Miami. He has raised his scoring average to 11.7 points per game and is second on the team in scoring. He has at least 20 points in four of the last five games, and is averaging 23.0 ppg in that stretch. Stoglin is hitting 57 percent from the floor, 53 percent from 3-point range and 91 percent from the line in the last five games.
Sophomore center Jordan Williams set a single-season school record Wednesday at Miami, posting his 23rd double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Williams snapped the previous mark of 22, set by Len Elmore in 1974. Williams is among the leading candidates for All-ACC honors this season. He remains atop the league in rebounding with 11.8 boards per game and could become the first Terrapin since Joe Smith to lead the ACC on the boards. Smith topped the ACC chart with 10.7 rpg in 1993-94.
Maryland is attempting to add to a string of 15 consecutive seasons with at least 19 wins. The last time the Terrapins failed to reach that plateau was a 17-13 record in 1995-96. The Terrapins are on an 18-season string with at least seven conference victories in a season.
Scouting the Cavaliers
Virginia has won three of its last four to get a game above .500 at 15-14 on the season, including a 6-9 conference mark. The Cavaliers have wins over Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech and NC State and a loss to Boston College during that stretch.
The Cavs are on two opposite ends of the spectrum in scoring offense and defense. They rank second in the ACC by allowing opponents just 62.3 ppg but are scoring just 61.4 ppg themselves, last in the conference.
Senior guard Mustapha Farrakhan and freshman guard Joe Harris each average double-figure scoring and are coming off solid performances in Virginia's win over NC State. Harris had a game-high 19 points on 4-of-7 shooting from 3PT range while Farrakhan added 15.
Senior forward Will Sherrill rejoined the starting lineup in Virginia's last game for the first time since Jan. 19 and had 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting (4-of-6 3FG) as well as a team-high eight rebounds. Seven-foot center Assane Sene leads the team in rebounding with 5.4 rpg and junior guard Sammy Zeglinski (6.7 ppg, 2.2 apg) rounds out the starting lineup.
Virginia ranks third in the ACC in 3FG percentage (.385), just behind Miami and Duke (both .386). Against NC State the Cavs shot better from 3-point range (10 of 21, .476) than they did from the field (21 of 53, .396).
