ORLANDO, Fla. - The Maryland softball team went 1-1 Saturday in the Citrus Classic at Disney's Wide World of Sports in Orlando. The Terps throttled undefeated Longwood 16-0 in five innings in game one.

The Terrapins (6-7) fell 5-3 after a late rally to another undefeated squad, Notre Dame, in the second game of the day.

Senior Kerry Hickey allowed the Lancers one hit in game one. In the top of the first, the Maryland offense exploded with eight runs off seven hits, all singles.

The Terps added three more in the third, as freshman Candice Beards hit her first career home run to lead off. Junior Bree Hanafin hit a 2-RBI double later in the inning and Maryland scored five more runs in the fourth.

Stats from the Maryland-Longwood game were not immediately available.

In the second game, junior Kendra Knight started in the circle for the Terps. She worked 3.0 innings and notched two strikeouts and gave up two earned runs. Notre Dame's Heather Johnson homered to left field with two outs in the top of the first inning.

With two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the third, Knight walked Alexia Clay to bring in a run. The Irish went on to score three more runs for a 5-0 lead.

Junior Vangie Galindo went 3-for-4 in the game, and 4-for-6 on the day with two walks, as she led the bottom of the sixth off with a base hit. With the bases loaded, junior Kathy McLaughlin reached on a fielder's choice as Galindo was called out at home. Beards then drew a walk to bring in the Terps' first run of the game. In the bottom of the seventh, senior Marisha Branson drew a walk to bring in the Terps' final run with the bases loaded.

Maryland will play Temple Sunday at 11:30 a.m. in the Terrapins' final game of the Citrus Classic at Disney's Wide World of Sports. The Terps will open their home season at Robert E. Taylor Stadium East Carolina Wednesday with a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
