WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The University of Maryland women's tennis team picked up its 13th win of the season Friday afternoon, trouncing Wake Forest 6-1.
No. 30 Maryland (13-7, 3-7 ACC) got off to a solid start, winning the doubles point for the 14th time this season, to take a 1-0 lead over the 54th-ranked Demon Deacons. The Terps won all three doubles matches, anchored at No. 1 doubles by the 22nd-ranked duo of Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar and Jordaan Sanford. Julia Huschke and Cristina Stancu, playing together for just the second time, breezed past the Deac's Brigita Bercyte and Anna Mydlowska 8-2 at No. 3 doubles. Maryland earned the point with an 8-4 win by Ana Belzunce and Welma Luus at the No. 2 spot.
The Terps continued their dominance in singles getting a quick win at the No. 5 spot by Stancu. She defeated Mydlowska in straight sets 6-3, 6-0.
Sanford sealed the match for the Terps with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Wake Forest's Emilee Malvehy at No. 2 singles. Maryland also got singles victories from 31st-ranked Sanchez-Quintanar at No. 1 singles, Belzunce at No. 3, and Luus at No. 4.
The win over Wake Forest was the Terps biggest conference win in just over five years, since Maryland defeated Virginia Tech at home 6-1, April 13, 2006. It marked their biggest conference road win in six years, when the Terps beat Virginia in Charlottesville 6-1, April 13, 2005.
"Today's match was really challenging for our group," said Maryland head coach Howard Joffe. "As the afternoon wore on we were able to play stronger and handle ourselves better. It's a good win for us on the road."
Maryland wraps up the regular season at 33rd-ranked N.C. State Saturday at noon. The Terps are currently ninth in the ACC standings, but are tied with N.C. State in the win column and sit just one behind Georgia Tech (both N.C. State and Georgia Tech have two matches remaining, while the Terps have just the one against the Wolfpack).
