COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Miami third baseman Brad Fieger broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning with a two-run homer and Miami went on to a 5-2 victory to split a doubleheader with Maryland on Sunday afternoon.

Fieger's home run came on a full count and on the ninth pitch of the at-bat against Terrapin reliever Eric Potter, who allowed just one hit in his two innings, but had walked Harold Martinez prior to facing Fieger. The Canes (24-12, 13-4) added an insurance run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Fieger.

Miami's E.J. Encinosa (3-2) spread out six hits, gave up two unearned runs, struck out five and walked one in seven innings in the win. Potter (3-5) took the loss.

Austin Kilbourne went 2-for-3 to raise his batting average to .441 and Alfredo Rodriguez extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single in the third inning. Tim Kiene was also 2-for-3, marking his fourth multiple-hit effort in the last seven games.

After Miami's Zeke DeVoss gave the Canes a 1-0 lead in the second with a RBI single, the Terps (17-20, 4-14) scored two runs in the third to take the lead.

Aaron Etchison drew a leadoff walk and Korey Wacker laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Etchison into scoring position, but Fieger's throw to first went into right field and allowed Etchison to score. Wacker was thrown out at third on the play, but Rodriguez and Ryan Holland later singled to put runners on the corners. Like they did in game one, Maryland used a delayed steal, with Holland taking off for second and drawing a throw to allow Rodriguez to come home from third.

But the Canes tied it at 2-2 the next inning and Maryland left the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, leaving the door open for Miami to go ahead on Fieger's home run.

Terrapin starter Chuck Ghysels pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on five hits while walking eight and striking out five but did not factor into the decision.

Maryland returns to action on Tuesday when it plays host to James Madison at 7 p.m.
