COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Maryland pitching held Saint Joseph's to three hits, with Jeff Crosswhite, Jimmy Reed and Jake Stinnett combining to keep the Hawks hitless over the final six innings, and the Terps snapped a six-game losing streak with a 4-1 win Tuesday night.
Crosswhite (1-0) earned the first win of his Maryland career by notching three outstanding innings of relief in which he struck out five without issuing a walk. Reed came on to pitch the seventh and Stinnett, a freshman who has played in 37 games at third base, made his first appearance on the mound and pitched two perfect innings to earn a save.
The Terps (18-25) scored two runs right out of the gate on a RBI single by Austin Kilbourne and a run-scoring groundout by Curtis Lazar and never trailed.
Saint Joseph's cut the lead to 2-1 in the second inning with a pair of singles off Maryland starter Charlie Haslup, but the Terps allowed just one runner to reach scoring position the rest of the way.
Kyle Convissar and Korey Wacker each went 2-for-3 at the plate, while seven of Maryland's nine starters recorded a hit. Wacker had a run-scoring single in the fourth and Maryland tacked on its final run when Convissar led off the sixth with a single and later scored on a Saint Joseph's error.
That proved to be enough support for Maryland's two freshmen and two sophomore pitchers, who combined to strike out 11 in the game. In addition to Crosswhite's five strike outs in three innings, Stinnett fanned three of the six batters he faced, while Halsup and Reed had one each.
Saint Joseph's (14-26) starting pitcher Taylor Mahoney (0-3) was charged with the loss after giving up two runs in an inning of work.
The Terps travel to Fairfax, Va., for a 3 p.m. contest with George Mason on Wednesday.
