RALEIGH, N.C. -
NC State's Matt Bergquist went 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI, Rob Chamra kept Maryland at bay in eight innings on the mound and the Wolfpack defeated the Terrapins 9-5 Saturday night.
Maryland's Ryan Holland homered off Chamra in the first inning, but the Wolfpack right-hander didn't allow another Terrapin run until the seventh, when NC State had built a comfortable 8-1 lead.
Bergquist ripped a two-run homer in the second to break a 1-1 tie and the Pack didn't trail again. Chris Diaz expanded the NC State (25-19, 10-13) lead with a bases-clearing double in the fourth that gave the Pack a 7-1 lead.
Chamra (7-0) earned the win after allowing three runs on six hits and two walks in eight innings while striking out six. Maryland's Brady Kirkpatrick (2-3) struck out a season-high eight but allowed eight runs on nine hits in six innings and took the loss.
Tim Kiene went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI to lead the Terps (20-26, 5-18) offensively, while Holland and Alex Ramsay also had multiple-hit efforts.
After Diaz's three-run double in the fourth, NC State's Harold Riggins increased the lead to 8-1 with a solo home run in the fifth. The Pack added an insurance run in the eighth on another solo homer by Bergquist.
Kiene hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning, while Ramsay and Korey Wacker drove in runs in the ninth, but the Terps were unable to get within striking distance.
The Terps and Wolfpack conclude the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
