PHILADELPHIA - Maryland set a school record to finish second in the women's 4x800 relay on Saturday at the Penn Relays track and field meet. Ashley Cromartie, Taylor Bumpas, Ariana Tabatabaie and Julie Sinkovitz went 8:51.59 to place second among 26 teams in the college division event.

Stony Brook edged the Terrapins in the race by finishing at 8:51.53. The previous best on record by a Maryland women's squad was 8:54.45 at the 2008 Penn Relays.

Also on Saturday:

Dwight Barbiasz finished second in the men's high jump with a leap of 7 feet, 2-1/4 inches. He was beaten by Maalik Reynolds of Penn, who went 7-3 1/4.

The Terps' 4x200 relay finished fifth in the IC4A section final, as Jarenn Stewart, Avery Graham, Chris Brown, Floyd Hawkes ran 1:27.47.

Maryland finished third in the women's ECAC section final in the 4x200 relay, running 1:37.48 as Ashley Hendrix, D'Ambour Lewis, Heidi Paul and DeAnna Brown ran a season-best.

In highlights from the first two days:

Sophomore Jon Hill went 6-11 1/2 to win the Eastern Section of the men's high jump Friday Hill, a transfer from the University of Texas, cleared the mark on his second attempt and bested the four competitors who had cleared at 6-9 3/4.

Amina Smith placed 4th in the Championship section of the women's high jump with a mark of 1.75m (5-8 3/4).

The men's 4x200m relay team of Jarenn Stewart, Avery Graham, Chris Brown, and Floyd Hawkes qualified for the finals on Saturday. They posted a time of 1:26.84 in Friday's heats.

The women's 4x200m relay team also made it back to the Saturday ECAC finals. The team of Ashley Hendrix, DeAnna Brown, Heidi Paul, and D'Ambour Lewis ran a time of 1:38.58.

Moriah Young posted a strong showing in the women's shot put and the hammer. She had a PR in the shot put with a mark of 14.72m (48-3 1/2), finishing second in the Eastern section of the event. Young's mark ranks third all-time at Maryland. She also performed well in the hammer, finishing fifth in the college division with a mark of 52.68m (172-10).

Kristen Batts also performed well in the throws. She was 5th in the championship section of the discus with a mark of 49.02m (160-9). She also placed 8th in the hammer with a mark of 52.27m (171-5).

The distance medley relay team of Ashley Cromartie, DeAnna Brown, Nicole Banker, and Ashley Campbell was competitive in their heat posting a time of 11:46.27.

Dan McDevitt performed well in the open 5K event Thursday evening. He ran a time of 14:46.00 in this event, the best this season by a Terrapin by 20 seconds.

Ashlyn Sinclair remained consistent in the 3k Steeplechase with a time of 10:59.10.

Maryland will compete next on Thursday evening when it hosts the Kehoe Twilight Meet in College Park. Events are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
