BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Dwight Barbiasz cleared 7 feet, 1-1/2 inches to tie for first place in the men's high jump and advance to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships on Thursday at the East Preliminary Rounds being held at Indiana University.
Barbiasz, a junior from Milford,N.H., was one of eight competitors over the bar at 7-1 1/2, with the top 12 finishers from the preliminary moving to the nationals, to be held June 8-11 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Sophomore teammate Jon Hill cleared 7-0 1/4, but had to participate in a jump-off with D.J. Smith of Auburn for the 12th and final spot. Smith cleared 7-1 1/2 to earn the final position to advance and send Hill into the 13th spot.
Barbiasz came into the competition seeded fourth in the East Region. He earned All-America status in March when he tied for fourth at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Maryland had three participants in the women's hammer, which was also contested on Thursday. Senior Kristen Batts placed 35th at 174-10, junior Jessie Echard was 37th at 171-10 and sophomore Moriah Young was 41st at 168-0.
A mark of 191-3 was needed to reach the top 12 in the women's hammer, which was won by Dorotea Habazin of Virginia Tech, who had a mark of 221-6.
Young will compete in the women's shot put on Friday, while Batts is in the field for the women's discus on Saturday.
