COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland first baseman Tim Kiene has been honored for his play in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, where he hit .326 with 10 home runs and 31 RBIs for the Newport Gulls this summer.
A rising sophomore, Kiene was named to the All-NECBL first team on Tuesday and the Perfect Game USA Summer Collegiate All-American Team on Thursday.
Kiene, who as a freshman ranked sixth in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a .352 batting average in league games, went on a torrid stretch of hitting over his last 30 games for the Terrapins. He hit .371 over that stretch and recorded multiple hits in 11 of his last 19 games.
The South Windsor, Conn., native picked up right where he left off in summer-league play, finishing the season ranked ninth in the NECBL in batting average and second in home runs.
Kiene helped lead Newport to a 29-13 regular-season record - best in the NECBL - as the Gulls finished the season on a team-record 12-game winning streak.
Maryland on Sept. 16 opens fall practice, a six-week stretch of workouts that culminates with the Red & Black Super Regionals Oct. 28-30.
