UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Maryland won four individual events on Saturday, including a victory for Zack Ray, who missed all of last season with injuries, at the Nittany Lion Challenge hosted by Penn State.
Ray, a Terrapin senior, won the men's long jump at 23 feet, 6 inches on Saturday. He also earned a second-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.16 after running 8.15 in the preliminaries.
Maryland had four of the top five finishers in the women's high jump, getting a victory from sophomore Amina Smith at 5-9.25. Freshman Thea LaFond was second (5-8, 7th all-time) and freshman Amber Melville (5-5) was fourth, with Lucile Cancre finishing fifth, also at 5-5.
Senior Ashley Cromartie went 2:14.20 to win the women's 800 meters in 2:14.20, a mark that puts her in ninth place on Maryland's all-time list. The Terrapins also placed third and fourth in that event, with Taylor Bumpas going 2:16.72 and Nicole Banker finishing in 2:17.14.
Junior Moriah Young picked up a victory for Maryland in the women's 20-pound weight throw, going 60-6.75. She went more than two feet past her previous season-best and is only the fifth Maryland female to go past 60 feet indoors. He now ranks third on the all-time list. Teammate Jessie Echard was fourth in 55-4.25, improving her mark which ranks 10th all-time at Maryland.
Young also was third in the shot put at 45-9.
LaFond, who won four individual state titles last year as a senior, placed second in the triple jump at 40-11, one of only four Terrapin women ever over 40 feet indoors. She leapt into third place all-time at Maryland on the indoor list with the best triple-jump mark in eight years.
Junior Shawn David went 49.12 to place fifth in the men's 400, moving into eighth on the Terps' all-time list. Sophomore Kyle Graves went 2:28.44 to place fourth in the men's 1,000 and earn eighth place on the Terps' list in that event.
Josh Haghighi also got a top-three finish for the Terrapins in the men's weight throw at 54-6.50.
Maryland plays host next Saturday to the Terrapin Invitational at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Md.
