COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland swimming and diving team swept West Virginia Saturday at Eppley Recreation Natatorium.

The men's team dropped the Mountaineers 180-120 for the first time in head coach Sean Schimmel's four-year tenure. The women's squad topped WVU 202-97 for its sixth consecutive dual meet win of the season.

First place finishes for the Terps on the men's side came from Alex Spina in the 1000 free (9:31.88), John Hauser in the 200 free (1:41.62) and the 100 free (45.25), Anderson Sloan in the 100 breast (57.27), Jack Clewlow in the 1-meter (299.62) and 3-meter dive (348.80), Andrew Relihan in the 200 back (1:49.25) and 200 IM (1:52.21), David Speese in the 200 breast (2:07.64), and Matthew Tynan in the 500 free (4:38.68).

Other highlights for Maryland included Tynan in the 1000 free (second - 1:55.21), Relihan in the 200 free (third - 1:42.21), and Speese (second - 58.57) and Colin Stang in the 100 breast (third - 58.68).

Sean Stewart took second in the 200 fly (1:51.07) and Hauser touched the wall second in the 50 free (20.68). Charlie Rommel was third in the 100 free (46.36) and Bradley Dillon was second in the 200 back (1:49.92). Raymond Cswerko captured second in the 200 breast (2:08.42) and third in the 200 IM (1:56.50). Spina was third in the 500 free (4:41.76) and Jeff Winters took second in the 100 fly (50.00).

Tim Tolino secured third place finishes in both the 1-meter (295.57) and 3-meter dive (307.42). The Terps also captured the 200 medley relay (1:31.12).

On the women's side, Maryland was led by top finishes from Melanie Busch in the 100 back (56.45) and 50 free (23.63), Alexa Hamilton in the 100 (1:03.74) and 200 breast (2:16.33), Jessica Whelan in the 1-meter (292.86) and 3-meter dive (301.12), Megan Lafferty in the 100 free (50.60) and 100 fly (55.14), Ginny Glover in the 200 back (1:59.93), Jennifer Roberts in the 200 IM (2:05.44).

Other solid performances for the Terps included Kacie Ciampoli in the 1000 free (second - 10:19.90), Glover (second - 1:49.57) and Victoria Cassidy (third - 1:52.16) in the 200 free, Elena Donald in the 100 back (third - 58.20) and Roberts (second - 2:02.19) and Addison Koelle (third - 2:02.69) in the 200 fly. Carolyn Fittin was second in the 50 free (23.74), Roberts captured third in the 100 free (52.74) and Busch finished second in the 200 back (2:03.56).

Laura Flewelling took second in the 100 breast (1:04.50) and second in the 200 breast (2:22.29). Cassidy was Maryland's top finisher in the 500 free (second - 4:54.28) and Koelle followed Lafferty with a third place showing in the 100 fly (57.62). Cassidy and Chelsea Eberwein helped the Terps sweep the 200 IM with second (2:06.42) and third (2:09.44) place finishes, respectively.

Alisa Kurbatova was second in both the 1-meter (276.30) and 3-meter dive (291.75). Maryland also swept the 200 medley (1:43.42) and 200 free (1:34.23) relays.

"I think we are starting to put together our championship season. Coming into this weekend, we talked about execution and putting the work we've done into play here and that certainly showed," Schimmel said. "The way the team has come together as one - it's been a real focus for us all year - and it's just great, in particular for the guys, to beat West Virginia. To get the W on both sides really sets us up well heading into championship season."

Maryland wraps up the regular season with a dual meet against Georgetown Feb. 4.
