Terps-Hokies in Saturday Matinee at Comcast

Maryland will look to put an end to its three-game losing streak when it plays at home in a Saturday matinee matchup with Virginia Tech. The Terrapins are tied for sixth in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings with a 2-3 record. The Hokies were in 11th after opening league play at 1-4.

The Terrapins lost both games against Virginia Tech last season, losing 74-57 at home in January and 91-83 in Blacksburg in February. Maryland still holds a 27-10 edge in the all-time series.

Senior guard Sean Mosley continues to climb a number of career charts for the Terrapins. He is 34 points away from becoming the 50th Terrapin in history with 1,000 career points and has already become the 40th Terp with at least 500 rebounds. Mosley has 2,971 career minutes on the floor for the Terps (22nd all-time) and will soon become the 21st Terrapin with at least 3,000 minutes. Mosley is 16th on the career steals list with 133 and a start Saturday against Virginia Tech will be his 96th, tying him for 17th on Maryland's all-time list. He is in line to become only the eighth Terrapin in history to combine 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 200 assists and 120 steals in a career.

Sophomore guard Terrell Stoglin posted his 17th consecutive game in double figures in points with a team-high 16 against Duke on Wednesday night. Stoglin now averages 20.9 points per game, best in the Atlantic Coast Conference (Harrison Barnes of North Carolina was at 17.4 before Thursday's game at home against NC State. With a third of the season remaining, Stoglin could end up pushing some Maryland school records for a sophomore. Tom McMillen averaged 21.2 points per game in 1972 and only three Maryland sophomores have averaged 20 ppg (McMillen, Joe Smith with 20.8 in 1995 and John Lucas with 20.1 in 1974). Stoglin is also closing on the sophomore mark for 3-pointers in a season, with his 48 in striking distance of the 64 made by Greivis Vasquez in 2008.

Following the matinee tilt with the Hokies, Maryland plays a number of its remaining games on the road. The Terps are home only three times in February, but hit the road for six ACC games. North Carolina will pay a visit to Comcast Center on Saturday, Feb. 4 in a game now slated to be carried on ESPN.

The Terps' schedule is difficult the rest of the way. Of their 10 games remaining in the regular season following the meeting with Virginia Tech, the Terps play five nationally ranked teams (home-and-home with North Carolina, home-and-home with Virginia and the annual trip to Duke).

Scouting the Hokies

After a 70-68 home loss to BYU Wednesday night, Virginia Tech has a 12-8 record on the season... The Hokies have dropped five of the last six and have a 1-4 mark in the conference, with the lone win coming at 15th-ranked Virginia last Sunday.

The Hokies have been stingy defensively, allowing opponents to just 60.5 ppg and 39.3 percent shooting... They've been especially good on the perimeter, holding opposing teams to 25.1 percent shooting from 3-point range, a mark that leads the conference. In their win at Virginia, Tech held the Cavaliers to 45 points.

Though they haven't reached the 70-point plateau in the last seven games (2-5 over that span), the Hokies are 8-0 when they do score 70 or more... Junior guard Erick Green is the top offensive threat, averaging 15.8 ppg on 48.1 percent shooting... Green also has a team-high 56 assists to just 30 turnovers, with his 1.9 assist-to-turnover ratio ranking fifth in the ACC.

Senior guard Dorenzo Hudson is the second-leading scorer, averaging 11.8 ppg, while freshman forward Dorian Finney-Smith is the Hokies' top rebounder with 7.3 rpg... 6-foot-7 swingman Jarell Eddie has made 36 of 73 (.493) 3-pointers this season.

Upcoming

Following a trip to Miami on 2/1, the Terps then return home to face nationally ranked North Carolina on 2/4... Note that the North Carolina game will also be televised only on ESPN.

The Terps will then play five of their next seven on the road... Maryland has only three home games and six road contests in February.
