K.J. Hockaday provided the offense and freshman Alex Robinson tossed three scoreless innings as Team Szefc defeated Team Vaughn, 6-5, to complete a three-game sweep of the Fall World Series Tuesday afternoon at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
Hockaday started Team Szefc's four-run second inning with a double to left field, which drove in Andrew Amaro and LaMonte Wade Jr. all the way from first base to stake Team Szefc to a 3-0 lead. Hockaday finished the game 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored.
Meanwhile on the mound, Robinson gave up no runs on one hit and struck out six of the 11 batters he faced over three innings to earn the win.
For Team Vaughn, Kyle Moore notched a double and scored two runs and added a RBI. Greg Olenski drove in two runs and Charlie White went 2-for-4.
Team Szefc got the offense going early. After Amaro led off with a walk and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt, Wade singled through the right side to bring in Amaro in the first inning.
In the second inning following Hockaday's two-RBI double, Jack Cleary singled through the left side to score Hockaday and increase Team Szefc's lead to 4-0. Later in the inning with Cleary at second and Kyle Convissar at third, Jose Cuas beat out an infield single to third base to plate Convissar and increased the squad's lead to five.
Team Vaughn struck in the bottom of the fourth. Michael Montville led off with a walk and scored one batter later when Moore doubled to left field. After Tim Kiene struck out, Brandon Lowe laid down a bunt single to move Moore to third. Kevin Martir then stepped to the plate and drove Moore home with a single to center field.
Lowe moved to third and Martir to second after a wild pitch before Olenski drove a single through left side of the infield to plate two runs and bring Team Vaughn within one run.
Team Szefc tacked on an insurance run in the sixth. Convissar led off with a double down the left field line and Jack Cleary followed with a double of his own to increase the lead to two.
Jack Stinnett came on in the bottom of the sixth inning to record a four-out save and earn his third save in as many games. In three games, Stinnett pitched 3-1/3 innings of scoreless baseball and struck out six batters.
