COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Quotes form Mark Turgeon in advance of Maryland's game vs. LIU Brooklyn Friday at 7 p.m.
On Shaquille Cleare's performance in the opener against Morehead State:
"The encouraging part of his performance was his work on the defensive end. Not just the blocks, but his post defense was good, and his awareness and presence were much better. He is getting some confidence and I think that getting to the foul line was really good for his confidence. He has really been working on his free throws, before and after practice."
On what makes Charles Mitchell such a good rebounder:
"He just goes after it. He goes for the rebound every time. He has quick feet and he doesn't accept block outs and he has a good nose for the ball and a good feel for it."
On if he has spent more time working on defense than offense:
"No we spend way too much time on offense, which is why we could not guard anybody the whole first half of the Kentucky game. We have spent a lot more time on defense since that game and I think it showed. Offensively, we have a lot of good players and good scorers, so I am confident that the offense will come."
On if Pe'Shon Howard has to look for his shot more:
"No I do not want him passing up wide open shots. I think he had a three in the first half he could have taken and I would like to explore on the break a little bit more, but I really think we just need someone to lead our team right now and he is willing to do it. I don't want him not shooting, but I want him to run our team first. Seth [Allen] does not think that way. Seth thinks "score," and then run the team. Pe'Shon can and will make open shots."
