Northeast Duals Next Up For Terps

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The 16th-ranked Maryland wrestling team travels to Troy, N.Y., on Saturday to compete in the Journeymen/Asics Northeast Duals at Hudson Valley Community College.
Three matches are on tap for the Terps. The day begins with Columbia at 9:30 a.m.; followed by a match against No. 23 Purdue at 11:25 a.m. Maryland closes the event against sixth-ranked Illinois at 1:40 p.m.

Last Time Out
Four wrestlers won individual titles at the Brockport/Oklahoma Invitational on Nov. 11. The Terps placed second with 127.5 points behind No. 10 Oklahoma.
Five Terps reached the championship round with No. 3Josh Asper(174), No. 10 Christian Boley(197),Shane Gentry(125) and No. 10Jimmy Sheptock(184) all claiming titles.Lou Mascola(149) racked up three pins for the best aggregate time at the tournament (4:49).
Next Up
Maryland travels to the Nittany Lion Open on Sunday, Dec. 2. The tournament will be held at Rec Hall on the campus of Penn State University.

Scouting The Terps

The Terps finished second at the Brockport/Oklahoma Invitational behind No. 10 Oklahoma. Four Terrapins walked away with titles: Josh Asper, Christian Boley, Shane Gentry and Jimmy Sheptock.
Asper is the highest-ranked Terp on the squad. Ranked third this week at 174 by InterMat, Asper is 4-0 with two of those victories via pin, which is tied for third on the team.
Boley (197) and Sheptock (184) are both ranked 10th by InterMat. Boley went 3-0 at Brockport, while Sheptock went 4-0 with two major decisions, a technical fall and a pin. Entering the weekend, Sheptock is tied with Geoffrey Alexander and Gentry for the team lead in dual meet points scored (9).
In the squad's season opener against Johns Hopkins and West Virginia, No. 15 Alexander (133) racked up a team-high four takedowns in two matches. The sophomore is 4-1 and is tied for third on the team with two pins.
Gentry (125) is tied for fifth on the team in total wins (6). Gentry picked up two pins en route to his 125-pound title two weekends ago.
At 149, Lou Mascola is 5-1 with three wins by pin, which is tied for second on the team. All three of his pins came at the Brockport/Oklahoma Invitational. Mascola rebounded from an early-round defeat to No. 8 Nick Lester of Oklahoma to place third.

This weekend will be the Lions' first duals of the season. Columbia opened its campaign at the Michigan State Open and New York State Championships.
The Lions have two NCAA qualifiers back from last season and both are currently ranked by InterMat. At 157, Jake O'Hara is ranked 13th and is 8-0, while at 149, Steve Santos checks in at No. 15 and is 8-0 as well.
Both O'Hara and Santos took first place in the Open Division at the Michigan State Open. The duo also took top honors in the A Division at the New York State Championships.

The Fighting Illini will be wrestling in their first set of 2012-13 duals this weekend after opening their slate with three consecutive open competitions.
Illinois features six wrestlers ranked by InterMat including reigning All-Americans Jesse Delgado (125), B.J. Futrell (141), Conrad Polz (165) and Jordan Blanton (174), and return reigning Big Ten Champion Mario Gonzalez (197).
Delgado, Gonzalez and Polz are expected to make their season debuts this weekend, while Futrell enters 5-0 with all five victories coming at the Cyclone Classic on Nov. 10. Blanton is 6-1 with his only loss coming to Micah Barnes of Nebraska.
At 184, 11th-ranked Tony Dallago is 6-1 with all six victories coming via pin.

The Boilermakers have won four of their five duals this season including a victory over No. 25 Old Dominion to open the season. Their lone defeat came at the hands of No. 7 Missouri.
Purdue features five wrestlers currently ranked by InterMat and that qualified for last season's NCAA Championships. That group is led by 2010 All-American Cashé Quiroga. Quiroga placed fifth at 2012 Big Ten Championships.
Doug Welch leads the team in wins (11) and falls (4), while Ivan Lopouchanski is a perfect 9-0 this season and has climbed to No. 14 in the latest rankings.

Title Town
Four Terrapins won individual titles at the Brockport/Oklahoma Classic: Josh Asper (174), Christian Boley (197), Shane Gentry (125) and Jimmy Sheptock (184).
For Asper, it was his third consecutive title at Brockport with his first two coming at 165 pounds. Boley has won the 197-pound title the past two years.
Rare Encounter
This weekend marks only the second all-time meeting between the Terps and Boilermakers, as well as the second all-time meeting between the Terps and Fighting Illini.
Maryland and Illinois faced off for the first time on Jan. 13, 2007 in College Park with Illinois winning the dual meet, 26-10.
The Terps only dual meet against the Boilermakers came as part of the Wendy's Duals on Jan. 17, 2010 in Ashland, Ohio. Maryland knocked off Purdue, 22-10.
Hudson Taylor Award After each dual meet this season, the Maryland coaching staff will select one wrestler as the recipient of the Hudson Taylor Award. The award is given to the most outstanding Terrapin wrestler in the meet.
Geoffrey Alexander received the award following Terrapin victories over Johns Hopkins and West Virginia to open the season.
ACC Recognizes Alexander Geoffrey Alexander earned Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Wrestler of the Week honors for the week of Nov. 6 after posting a 2-0 record at the season-opening Terrapin Duals.
Alexander is a first-time recipient. The sophomore from Pittsburgh, Pa., kicked off the day with a pin of Johns Hopkins Ray Yagloski 1:59 into the match as the No. 15 Terps defeated the Blue Jays, 40-6.
In his second match of the afternoon against 17th-ranked Colin Johnston of West Virginia, Alexander grinded out a 7-5 decision to help the Terps defeat the Mountaineers, 24-10. Alexander shared the honor with Duke's Conner Hartmann, who won the 197-pound title at the Hokie Open. Welcome To 174 Josh Asper made his debut at 174 pounds Saturday, Nov. 3 at the NWCA All-Star Classic. The Parkton, Md., native was pitted against two-time All-American Jordan Blanton of Illinois, who began the season ranked No. 2.
Asper made a statement. After three periods could not separate the two wrestlers, Asper scored a takedown in overtime to win 3-1.
With the win, Asper remained undefeated in the annual showcase. He is 3-0 and has appeared in this event more than any other Maryland wrestler in program history.
Schedule The Best
Maryland's 2012-13 schedule features several of the nation's elite. The Terps face 12 teams that were among the top 30 at the NCAA Championships including two top-10 programs in Ohio State and Illinois.
The Terps face No. 6 Illinois on Nov. 24 at the Northeast Duals and No. 5 Ohio State on Dec. 16 at Madison Square Garden.
In addition, Maryland takes on No. 9 Nebraska, No. 12 Virginia Tech, No. 16 Virginia, No. 18 Pittsburgh, and potentially faces No. 7 Missouri and/or No. 19 Wyoming at the NWCA National Duals.
Movin' On Up
During the offseason, several wrestlers made the move to a higher weight class.
Lou Mascola defeated Danny Orem last weekend during the Red & Black Wrestle-Offs to earn the starting nod at 149. Mascola wrestled at 141 last season and finished with a record of 10-12.
Ben Dorsay, who started for the Terps last season at 149, makes the jump to 157 this season. Dorsay is expected to redshirt this year.
After placing sixth at the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive season in 2012, Josh Asper climbs to 174. Asper has compiled a record of 63-9 over the past two seasons.
At 184, Jimmy Sheptock slides up from 174 where he went 27-6 last season en route to his first ACC Championship.
Ty Snook moves up from 184 to 197 following a 14-15 campaign in 2012 where he will compete with Christian Boley.
In The Hunt The Terps placed seven wrestlers in the finals of last season's ACC Championships. Six of the seven wrestlers return for Maryland including three conference champions.
Christian Boley and Jimmy Sheptock will be looking for their second ACC title in as many seasons. Josh Asper will be looking to regain the crown after losing in the 165-pound final.
Geoffrey Alexander and Shane Gentry will both be looking for their first titles after falling in last season's championship round.
Grapple at the Garden The Terps schedule includes a trip to Madison Square Garden on Sunday, Dec. 16. It is the first-ever collegiate wrestling event to be held at the world famous arena.
Maryland will take on two Big Ten powerhouses in No. 5 Ohio State and No. 9 Nebraska.

Beginning his fifth season at Maryland, head coach Kerry McCoy has compiled a record of 60-17-2, which is the highest winning percentage in program history (.772). McCoy, a three-time ACC Coach of the Year honoree, led the Terps to their second consecutive ACC crown in 2012. McCoy's accomplishments are numerous and include:
