COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Quotes from head coach Mark Turgeon in advance of Maryland's game at Northwestern Tuesday at 9:15 p.m.
On Logan Aronhalt's play Saturday:
"It was good to see him make shots and make multiple shots. I think he made one the game before that, but there's a lot of pressure when you don't play a lot and you come in and you get an open look. I was happy for him, he really helped out team the other night. I think he guarded better, that's the biggest hiccup with him just defensively. If he can do it defensively, I know he can help us offensively. This team is so up and down, and guys individually are so up and down. It's been a little frustrating the last two weeks, but I was happy for Logan."
On if there's a difference between ACC and Big Ten Teams:
"I don't think there is. I think that each league has teams that play fast, each league has teams that play slow. I heard some stat the day we switched leagues that the ACC was averaging like 62.75 possessions per team and the Big Ten was averaging 65.32 so it was really close. Indiana scored over 100 last night, I know Michigan State really likes to run, Northwestern is a little bit different they run the Princeton [offense]. I think it's all the same, there are guys in our league right now that don't particularly play fast. It all evens out."
On if this is tougher game to prepare for:
"It's a tough challenge for our team where we are right now. They have shooters all over the floor, you saw us against Lafayette against great shooters as the game went on. They got hot against us, and we had trouble guarding it. That game will help us Tuesday, but it's just a hard game it's a lot of stuff to throw at our guys. But, we've played against the system a lot in the past, so hopefully we'll break it down. We'll have the right game plan defensively, and hopefully we'll be able to execute it. Against the zone they run the 1-3-1 half court trap. We have to make shots, and be strong with the ball. We'll work on it, and hopefully we'll play well against it but we've seen it before this year. Not as well as they run it, but we've seen it before."
On playing on the road:
"We were obviously not a very good road team this year, so we've talked about that. We defend better and we rebound better than last year's team, so that right there gives you a chance on the road. We're not executing at a high level, but we're sharing the ball pretty well. Hopefully we'll grow up and play with some maturity and some poise. Those are the things I think you need on the road to be successful. We're looking forward to the next step, let's see if we can do it."
