COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Former Maryland men's soccer star Desmond Armstrong was voted into the U.S. National Soccer Hall of Fame in veterans' balloting on Wednesday. Armstrong was a three-time All-ACC Team member during his time with the Terps from 1982 to 1985 and went on to represent the United States at the 1990 FIFA World Cup.
Armstrong was named to the All-ACC First Team in 1984, and was a member of the second team in 1983 and 1985. The defender-midfielder finished his Maryland career with 24 goals and 18 assists in 78 games.
Following a successful collegiate campaign, Armstrong, a Washington native, spent 1988-89 with the Baltimore Blast and 1991 with the Maryland Bays. His pro career spanned 10 years and he was the first American to sign professionally in Brazil when he played for Santos FC.
Armstrong was a mainstay for the U.S. national team, earning 73 starts in 81 games over eight years. He logged 6,528 minutes for the United States from 1987 to 1994.
Armstrong was inducted into the Maryland Soccer Hall of Fame in 2007.
