FORT MYERS, Fla. -
The Maryland softball team dropped two games at Florida Gulf Coast Wednesday night in Fort Myers, Fla. The Terrapins (18-11) fell 3-1 in game one and 9-1 in game two to the Eagles (19-16).
Senior Vangie Galindo led the Terps at the plate, as she went 3-for-7 on the day with a double. Sara Acosta, Nikki Maier, Kathy McLaughlin and Bree Hanafin each had two hits.
Senior Kendra Knight started in the circle in game one. The Eagles scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the first. After a walk and a double, Chelsea Zgrabik homered to score Florida Gulf Coast's only three runs of the game. Knight allowed four hits and struck out five.
The Terps answered with their only run of the game in the top of the second. Acosta walked with two outs, then freshman Shannon Bustillos doubled to move her to third. Acosta scored on a wild pitch.
The Eagles took an early 8-0 lead in the bottom of the first. They had five hits and the Terps committed three errors in the half inning. With the bases loaded, pitcher Kaitlyn Schmeiser caught the Eagles' Kristen Bembnowski looking for the third out.
FGCU added its ninth run in the bottom of the second with back-to-back doubles.
Hanafin hit a leadoff home run in the top of the fourth for Maryland's run.
Next, the Terps will open ACC play at North Carolina (22-8) this weekend in Chapel Hill. They will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday and a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
