Wake Forest scored seven runs in the fifth inning to overcome a 5-1 deficit and Maryland had its 10-game winning streak snapped as it fell to the Demon Deacons 10-5 Friday night in both team's Atlantic Coast Conference opener.
Maryland (11-2, 0-1 ACC) had built a 5-1 lead behind a balanced offensive attack when the Demon Deacons (12-4, 1-0 ACC) exploded for seven runs in the fifth. Thirteen batters came to the plate in the inning, and at one point Wake recorded five run-scoring doubles in a row.
Maryland starter Brady Kirkpatrick (1-1), who had allowed just one earned run in 20 2/3 innings entering the game, allowed eight runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 and took the loss.
Wake Forest's Tim Cooney (3-1) was credited with the win after logging five innings and allowing five runs on nine hits.
The Terrapins outhit Wake Forest 13 to 12, but left a season-high 13 runners on base. First baseman Tomo Delp's turned in a 3-for-4 performance, while second baseman Kyle Convissar, left fielder Michael Montville and right fielder Jordan Hagel all had two hit days.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, Maryland had assumed the lead in the second with a three-run inning, with Convissar, Montville and third baseman K.J. Hockaday starting the frame with three straight singles. Delp drew a bases-loaded walk for the first run, and shortstop Alfredo Rodriguez drove in another with a sacrifice fly. Center fielder Charlie White later singled to score the third run, but the Terps ended the inning by leaving the bases loaded.
Convissar's opposite-field home run in the third made it 4-2, and Maryland added its final run in the fifth on a bases-loaded RBI single by Aaron Etchison.
But Wake used seven hits in the decisive seven-run fifth to take command, and relievers Jack Fischer and Michael Dimock kept the Terps off the scoreboard over the final four innings.
Maryland and Wake Forest will play game two of the series Saturday at 4 p.m. RHP David Carroll (2-0, 2.12) gets the ball for the Terps and will face RHP Justin Van Grouw (1-1, 4.42).
