The Maryland softball team dropped two games to Virginia Tech Saturday in College Park. The Terps (18-13, 0-2 ACC) fell 5-0 in the first game and 7-5 in the second.
In game two, the Terrapins matched the Hokies (26-12, 4-0) run for run until a two-run top of the sixth gave Virginia Tech the win.
Kylie McGoldrick hit a two run homer in the top of the third to break open the scoring. Kathy McLaughlin drove in the Terps' first run with an RBI single to short in the bottom of the third. Bree Hanafin hit a sacrifice fly later in the inning to tie the game at two.
The Hokies added three more runs in the top of the fifth off of three hits and an error by the Terrapins.
Maryland matched the Hokies' three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Amanda McCann tripled to right to score two. After a Virginia Tech pitching change, Hanafin knocked in another run with a bunt.
Virginia Tech added two more runs for the win in the top of the sixth. Lauren Gaskill hit a two-RBI double for the go ahead runs.
In game one, the Terrapins fell 5-0. Kendra Knight allowed just five hits, but had eight walks. The Hokies scored all five runs in the top of the second. With one out and runners on, Knight notched one strike out to make it two outs. After allowing another hit, she got the final out with a strike out looking.
The Terps and the Hokies will play a single game Sunday, also at 1 p.m. Admission and parking are free.
