Maryland jumped on Duke early with seven runs in the first two innings and went on to score in all but one inning, recording its most runs in a conference game since 1999 with a 21-2 win over the Blue Devils Saturday afternoon.
Twelve Terrapins had at least one hit in the game and seven had multi-hit efforts, led by Kyle Convissar's 4-for-5 day. Convissar also drove in a pair of runs and became the first Terp since May 4, 2005 to score five runs in a game.
Alfredo Rodriguez had his team-high sixth multiple-RBI game of the year, driving in four on two hits and a sacrifice fly. Rodriguez was one of eight Terrapins with multiple RBIs.
In addition to the success Maryland's starters had - seven of nine had at least one hit - the bench also performed well. Matt Bosse, Jake Stinnett, Andrew Amaro, Greg Olenski and Aaron Etchison combined to go 8-for-11 with seven RBIs.
That helped Maryland (24-13, 7-10 ACC), which led 12-2 after six, blow the game wide open. The Terps scored a couple of runs in the seventh and then hung seven on the board with six hits in the eighth.
With the offense clicking on all cylinders, starting pitcher Brett Harman (5-2) also cruised. The right-hander matched a season high with eight strikeouts in six innings and allowed just two runs to pick up the win.
With his outing, Harman moved up three career lists. The fifth-year senior now ranks fourth in school history with 229 strikeouts, t-6th with 15 wins and ninth with 233 2/3 innings pitched. He sits seven behind former big leaguer and current assistant coach Eric Milton for third place on the career strikeouts list.
The Terps scored at least two runs against six of the seven pitchers Duke (13-23, 5-12 ACC) used in the game, taking control early on.
Maryland went through the entire lineup in the first inning, scoring four runs on four hits and two walks. Convissar led off the inning with a double and after a couple of outs, Maryland put together a two-out rally. K.J. Hockaday drew a walk and Rodriguez followed with a two-run single. Two batters later, Jack Cleary drove in two more with a double down the left-field line.
Tomo Delp helped stretch the lead to 6-0 in the second, driving in Convissar and Jordan Hagel with a double down the left-field line. Rodriguez, who leads the nation in sacrifice flies, got his eighth of the season later in the inning to make it 7-0.
And after Duke scored a single run in the third and fourth innings, Maryland scored 14 straight to end the game.
Convissar hit a solo home run in the fifth and the Terps exploded for seven runs in the eighth, when Maryland's bench players accounted for five hits and six RBIs.
Relief pitchers William Bouey, Sander Beck and Jamie Pashuck each pitched a scoreless inning to close it out.
Duke starting pitcher Trent Swart (3-5), who allowed seven runs on six hits in 1 1/3, took the loss.
Maryland will go for the sweep of Duke Sunday at 1 p.m. RHP David Carroll (3-1, 3.16) takes on Duke RHP Robert Huber (3-3, 3.43).
Notes: The 21 runs were Maryland's most in a conference game since April 3, 1999, when it won at Duke 21-13 ... Delp went 2-for-4 and now leads the team with a .325 batting average ... Delp extended his reached-base streak to 17 games, tied with Convissar for the longest this season ... Maryland's 21 hits were a season high ... Terrapin pitchers have issued just two walks so far vs. Duke, while the Blue Devils have issued 10 ... Maryland raised its team batting average from .263 to .271 ... Rodriguez now has a team-high 30 RBIs, which is the same amount team-leader Ryan Holland had in 2011 ... the Terps surrendered a home run for the first time this season at home when Duke's Jeff Kremer hit one in the fourth ... center fielder Korey Wacker had his team-high sixth outfield assist of the season when he threw out a runner trying to score in the first inning.
