BLACKSBURG, Va. - Jordan Hagel led the Maryland offense by going 3-for-4, but Virginia Tech scored three early runs and tacked on three more late in a 6-2, series-clinching victory Sunday afternoon.

The Terps (28-19, 8-16 ACC) were outhit for the first time in the series, as Virginia Tech (30-16, 10-14 ACC) finished with a narrow 11-to-9 advantage. Maryland left 10 runners on base in the game.

Tech starting pitcher Joe Mantiply allowed just one unearned run in six innings, and the Hokie offense produced six of its 11 hits in the first three innings to take an early 3-1 lead.

After Maryland starter David Carroll lasted just three innings, four Terrapin relievers held Tech to five hits over the final six innings, but two errors contributed to two unearned runs in the seventh and another in the eighth.

Mantiply (5-4), who struck out five and scattered five hits, earned the win, while Carroll (3-3) took the loss.

As they did in the first two games of the series, the Terps struck first with a run in the second inning. Matt Bosse, who was instrumental in Saturday's win, led off the second with a single up the middle and after moving to third on a Hokie error, scored when Jack Cleary executed a squeeze bunt.

Virginia Tech answered in the bottom of the second, using three straight hits to open the inning, followed by a sacrifice fly for a 2-1 lead. An inning later, the Hokies added another on a two-out RBI single by Ronnie Shaban.

That spelled the end for Carroll, who had averaged 7.25 innings pitched over his last four starts coming into Sunday's game.

Reliever Jamie Pashuck kept Maryland within two runs by retiring nine of the first 10 batters he faced between the fourth and sixth innings. An error in the seventh, though, opened the door for two more Hokie runs to make it 5-1.

Ryan Holland accounted for Maryland's other run with a solo home run in the ninth, his first of the season.

The Terps return to action Tuesday, when they play host to Norfolk State at 6 p.m.
