Jimmy Reed and Maryland kept No. 19 Virginia at bay for eight innings, but the Cavaliers scored eight runs in the ninth to overcome a one-run deficit and defeat the Terrapins 10-3 Friday night.
Reed tossed six scoreless before surrendering a pair of runs in the seventh, while Kyle Convissar drove in all three of Maryland's runs. The Terps (31-24, 9-20 ACC) held a 3-2 lead heading into the ninth, when Virginia scored eight times on four hits to clinch the series.
The Cavaliers (36-15-1, 18-11 ACC) took the lead with just one hit - using a double, three walks and a hit batsman to go ahead 4-3. And with the bases loaded and one out, Chris Taylor hit a grand slam to left field to make it 8-3.
It was an uncharacteristic performance by the Maryland bullpen, which entered the day with a 2.44 ERA. Charlie Haslup (5-5), who entered with two on and one out in the seventh and easily retired two batters before working a 1-2-3 eighth, was saddled with the loss. The junior allowed a leadoff double to Virginia's Stephen Bruno and issued a walk that proved to be the game-winning run in the ninth.
Korey Wacker replaced Haslup but was unable to record an out, and Jamie Pashuck retired one before surrendering a RBI fielder's choice and then the grand slam.
Maryland had been in control for the first six innings. The Terps struck first with a run in the second when Convissar hit a sacrifice fly to bring in K.J. Hockaday. Two innings later, Ryan Holland and Jack Cleary singled to set up Convissar, who ripped a two-run double down the left-field line.
Reed, meanwhile, cruised after pitching out of trouble in the first. The junior lefty retired 13 in a row between the second and sixth, setting down the side in order in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth. Reed struck out six and allowed just one hit in the first six innings, but a fielding error to start the seventh opened the door for Virginia.
After the error, Virginia's Derek Fisher doubled and a batter later, Kenny Towns drove in two with a double to the gap in right center, making it 3-2. Haslup then entered and easily worked out of trouble, keeping Maryland ahead until the ninth.
Cleary finished with three hits for the second straight day to raise his batting average to a team-high .327, while Hockaday had two hits for the second day in a row.
Virginia reliever Nick Howard (3-0) earned the win after holding Maryland to two hits over the final 5 1/3 innings.
Maryland will honor its seniors in the regular-season finale Saturday at 1 p.m. RHP David Carroll (4-3, 3.96) is expected to take on Virginia RHP Artie Lewicki (3-2, 4.10).
