COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Kevin Mooney and Alex Robinson, who have signed National Letters of Intent to attend the University of Maryland this fall, have been named Gatorade State Baseball Players of the Year in Maryland and New York, respectively.
The Gatorade State Baseball Player of the Year selection, managed by ESPNHS, is based on athletic production and impact in the 2011-12 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character.
A right-handed pitcher and outfielder, Mooney led North Harford High School to the Maryland Class 3A state final, pitching a perfect game and striking out 13 in the semifinal to beat North Hagerstown. On the season, Mooney went 9-1 with a 0.30 ERA and 114 strikeouts in 64 innings. At the plate, Mooney hit .361 with 30 RBI.
Mooney also maintained a 4.06 GPA and was a member of the National Honor Society, the German National Honor Society and his school's Student Government Association executive board.
Robinson led Holy Trinity High School in Hicksville, N.Y., to a 15-8 record and the Nassau-Suffolk Catholic High School championship series. The left-handed pitcher went 7-0 with a 0.41 ERA while recording 109 strikeouts and surrendering just 14 hits in 51 innings pitched during the season.
Robinson also maintained a B-plus average in the classroom and has tutored grade-school students in math and science, while also volunteering with youth baseball programs.
