COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Maryland scored seven runs in the bottom of the third inning and defeated Penn State 7-3 in a game that was called in the bottom of the fifth due to heavy rains Wednesday night at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
Sander Beck tossed four innings and gave up three runs, while David Carroll came on to pitch a scoreless fifth and was credited with the win as Maryland improved to 31-22.
The teams made it through the visiting half of the fifth, enough for the game to be considered official, before the rain became too heavy to continue. Home plate umpire Greg Howard sent both teams to the dugout after Penn State reliever Neal Herring's delivery sailed over the catcher's head for a four-pitch walk to lead off the bottom of the fifth.
Rains started falling just as the game started, though both starting pitchers worked through two scoreless innings without allowing a hit. Beck struck out two in the first inning, as did Penn State starter Mike Franklin.
And after the Nittany Lions (24-24) struck for a couple runs in the third, Maryland bounced right back to score seven in the bottom half.
The Terps batted around in the inning, with Kyle Convissar leading off by reaching on a catcher's interference and providing the final run with a RBI double his next time at bat.
In between, Jordan Hagel and K.J. Hockaday hit two-run singles to give Maryland the lead, while Tomo Delp and Jack Cleary drove in runs with sacrifice flies. The Terps totaled five hits in the inning, with Korey Wacker and Ryan Holland also reaching on bunt singles.
Conditions began to worsen in the fifth. Beck allowed a leadoff home run to Sean Deegan, and issued a walk to Steve Snyder. Carroll then replaced Beck on the mound, inheriting a 3-0 count, and induced a fly-out to right for the first out. After a single, he retired two more to escape trouble.
Carroll improved to 4-3 with the win, while Franklin was saddled with the loss and fell to 3-3.
Maryland wrapped up non-conference play with a 22-4 record, including 14-1 at home.
The Terps take a week off for finals before concluding regular-season play May 17-19 at home vs. Virginia.
