COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Alex Aust, Kelly McPartland, Iliana Sanza and Katie Schwarzmann represent Maryland on the 2013 Tewaaraton Watch List, announced Friday.
Aust had a breakout campaign in 2012, posting team-highs in assists (52) and points (96). The senior from Sterling, Va., already has eight goals through two games for the unbeaten Terps in 2013.
McPartland is one of only four sophomores on the initial list. The Farmingdale, N.Y., native tallied 39 goals and nine assists as a rookie. The young midfielder spent time with the U.S. women's national team in the offseason.
Sanza is the defending IWLCA National Defender of the Year and leads the Terps defensively. The senior from Cockeysville, Md., 46 ground balls and 33 caused turnovers in 2012 to help Maryland capture its fourth straight ACC title.
Schwarzmann is the reigning Tewaaraton winner and a three-time All-American from Sykesville, Md. The senior is off to a hot start in 2013, registering a team-high 10 goals, including a career-high seven at then-No. 2 Syracuse last weekend.
Both lists will be narrowed to 25 men's and women's nominees in late April. In mid-May, five men's and five women's finalists will be announced. These finalists will be invited to Washington, D.C. for the 13th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony, May 30 at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian.
