COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's tennis team lost to No. 47 Virginia, 7-0, at the Tennis Center at College Park Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers won the doubles point and then quickly notched three straight singles victories to take the match.
"I think we started good in doubles and we had a really good chance to win, but again, freshmen came into play," head coach Daria Panova said. "They see the other girls playing a little better than they're used to and they over hit it. But I think level wise; this team [Virginia] was top-20. I know it looked really easy [for them], but we kind of gave it to them. We're on a similar level to them. I hope the girls learn from it."
Virginia (3-4, 1-0 ACC) secured the doubles point with victories at the No. 3 and No. 1 positions. Maryland's (4-5, 0-2 ACC) top pair of senior Vroni Van Berlo and freshman Sarah Gealer lost, 8-4, to Virginia's Julia Elbaba and Stephanie Nauta. At No. 3, Li Xi and Caryessa Peretz defeated the freshmen tandem of Olga Gaistruk and Gabriela Srodowski, 8-1.
With the session already decided, freshmen Olga and Nataliya Bredikhina gave the Terps a bit of momentum going into singles with an 8-5 victory over Hana Tomiljanovic and Erin Vierra.
In singles, the Cavaliers jumped on the Terrapins early, winning the first set in every contest. Van Berlo was the only Maryland player to win a set in singles, taking the second from No. 10 Julia Elbaba, 6-4, before falling, 10-7, in the deciding super tiebreaker.
With the loss, the Terps drop to 0-4 against ranked opponents and are now 4-2 at home this season.
Maryland retakes the court immediately, traveling to No. 63 Virginia Tech for a Sunday match. Play is scheduled to begin from the Burrows-Burleson Tennis at 1 p.m.
