Box Score

ATLANTA - The Maryland softball team beat the defending ACC champion Georgia Tech 8-6 Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader in Atlanta. In the second game, the Terps led heading into bottom of the sixth, but fell 5-4.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Schmeiser pitched a complete game in game one for the Terps (22-22, 6-5 ACC). She allowed four earned runs with 10 strikeouts in her 7.0 innings of work.

Georgia Tech (19-23, 6-5) put a run on the board in the bottom of the first. Ashley Thomas reached on an error, then scored off Morgan Taylor's base hit.

The Terps took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third. Sara Acosta got on with an infield single, then Melissa Mancuso scored her with an RBI base hit.

The Yellow Jacket took back the lead at 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth. They scored three runs off a wild pitch and four base hits.

Maryland answered right back with three more runs in the top of the sixth. Acosta and McCann led off with back-to-back singles, then Shannon Bustillos hit a sacrifice fly to score Juli Strange.

Georgia Tech added a run in the bottom of the sixth when Hayley Downs led off with a triple, then scored off Thomas' single to make it a 6-5 Maryland lead. In the top of the seventh, Bridget Hawvermale drew a walk, then Acosta singled and McCann brought them both in with an RBI base hit. Tech tacked on one more run in the bottom of the seventh to finalize the score at 8-6. The win was Maryland's first over Georgia Tech since 2005.

Tech took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first in the second game. Thomas drew a walk, then Taylor doubled to bring her in. The Jackets made it 2-0 in the bottom of the third. Alyshia Rudnik singled, then scored off Courtney Ziese's base hit.

Maryland tied it up in the top of the fourth. Lexi Carroll.

Georgia Tech added a run for a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth, then Juli Strange hit a solo homer to start the top of the fifth to tie it once again. In that same inning, Hawvermale notched a base hit, then scored later on sac fly by Lindsey Schmeiser for a 4-3 lead.

Georgia Tech picked up two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the win. Rudnik was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie it, then scored an unearned run off a ground out.
