No. 16 Maryland Loses to Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, N.C. - Harold Deane scored 18 points as Virginia kept its NCAA Tournament hopes alive with a pivotal 81-74 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over 16th-ranked Maryland.

Courtney Alexander added 16 points for the Cavaliers (18-11, 7-9 ACC), who will be the sixth seed in the ACC Tournament and will face either Wake Forest or North Carolina in the first round on Friday. Virginia posted consecutive victories for the first time since a four-game winning streak gave the Cavs a 15-6 record on February 1st.

Laron Profit scored 24 points and Keith Booth added 17 for Maryland (20-9, 9-7), which will be the fifth seed and play Clemson in the first round. The Terrapins have struggled down the stretch, losing seven of their last 10.

The schools split the season series.
