Third-Ranked Clemson Edges Maryland
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Terrell McIntyre's three-pointer with 4:51 to play
snapped a tie and triggered a 7-0 run as third-ranked Clemson turned back host
and No. 11 Maryland, 67-63, in an Atlantic Coast Conference game.
Greg Buckner scored 16 points for Clemson (15-1), which is 4-0 in conference for
just the second time in school history. Merl Code added two free throws with 6.8
seconds to play to seal the victory, the 11th straight for the Tigers.
Keith Booth scored 16 points for Maryland (14-2, 4-1), which had a three-game
winning streak snapped. The Terrapins were trying for their best ACC start in
school history.
Clemson won for just the eighth time in 50 all-time meetings between the schools.
A fast-break layup by Matt Kovarik with 5:34 to play lifted Maryland into a 51-51
tie. But McIntyre responded with a three-pointer from the right wing. After
Rodney Elliott and Laron Profit missed three-pointers for the Terrapins, Harold
Jamison converted a layup to push the lead to five points.
A turnover by Booth led to a dunk by Jamison, capping the run and giving Clemson
a 58-51 lead with 3:15 remaining. Booth halted the run with two free throws and
Maryland had a chance to draw even closer after a steal on the inbounds pass, but
Profit missed a three-pointer from the left wing.
McIntyre then drilled a three-pointer from the right side to make it 61-53 with
2:51 to play. McIntyre made two free throws to give Clemson a 63-57 lead with 55
seconds left, but Sarunas Jasikevicius and Terrell Stokes hit three-pointers
around two foul shots by Tom Wideman, making it 65-63 with 7.4 seconds to go.
Greg Buckner scored five points in an 11-2 run that gave Clemson a 23-11 lead
with 9:44 remaining in the first half. The Terrapins responded with a 14-5
burst, keyed by six points from Jasikevicius, including a layup that pulled
Maryland to within 28-25 at the 2:30 mark.
Clemson held a 32-31 halftime lead despite committing 15 turnovers. Maryland did
not make a three-pointer until the one by Jasikevicius with 47 seconds to go.
