Navy Knocks Off Terps in Annapolis

ANNAPOLIS, Md. Despite winning three of the first four matches, the Maryland wrestling team fell to Navy, 26-12, in front of 1338 fans at Alumni Hall Saturday night.

No. 1 Jimmy Sheptock, No. 9 Christian Boley and No. 4 Spencer Myers all notched victories for the Terps (4-6, 0-1 ACC) in a match that began at 174 pounds. The Midshipmen won the final six matches of the dual, with Zach Johnson clinching the contest at 157 pounds.

No. 12 Matthew Miller put Navy in front with a fall over Tony Gardner. The sophomore dominated the second period, recording a 3-point near fall, before eventually pinning the Terrapin senior at 4:21.

Sheptock responded for the Terps at 184 pounds. The reigning ACC Wrestler of the Week took down James Mannier four times, capitalizing on the final takedown with a fall at 3:47 to tie the overall team score at 6-6.

Boley and Myers pushed the road squad's advantage to 12-6 with decision wins. Boley's performance was especially impressive. The New York native fell behind Paul Rands 5-2 entering the third period, but used three takedowns and a near fall to secure an 11-7 win.

The Terrapins would not record another win. Brendon Campbell started the run for Navy at 125 pounds, edging Paul O;Neiil, 8-5. At 133 pounds, Colton Rasche knocked off Tony Farace in another tight match.

A key match at 141 saw Joe Locksmith take out Shyheim Brown, 5-2. The Midshipmen would then notch two straight major decision wins. Raymond Borja dominated throughout against Derrick Evanovich in the 149-pound bout, before Zach Johnson rolled to a 14-5 win against Danny Orem.

Peyton Walsh closed out the match with an 8-3 decision over Tyler Manion at 165 pounds. The win was the Midshipmen's second straight over the Terps.

The Terrapins return to action for an ACC showdown with Virginia Tech on Jan. 19. Wrestling is scheduled to get underway in Blacksburg at 4 p.m. Select Terps will also compete in the Shorty Hitchcock Open the same day.
