MADISON, Wis. – Playing its third straight match against a ranked opponent, the Maryland volleyball team fell, 3-0 (14-25, 17-25, 17-25), to No. 6 Wisconsin Sunday afternoon at the UW Field House.
“Wisconsin is an elite program and they make it hard for you to play them,” said head coach Steve Aird. “I think we competed hard and the girls battled in a tough environment.”
Middle blockers Hailey Murray and Chavi St. Hill combined for a Terps block to start the match, but the Badgers countered with a 6-1 run. Sophomore setter Whitney Craigo made a kill, three assists, a service ace and a dig as she made her presence known on the court.
Wisconsin's setter Lauren Carlini made 12 assists to lead the Badgers to the set victory. The Terps made five service errors in the first set as the Badgers took the game, 25-14.
Maryland kept up with the Badgers in the first half of the second set, tying the game at five on an Ashlyn MacGregor kill, at six off a Wisconsin error and at seven with a Kelsey Hrebenach kill. The Badgers began pulling away, with help from four straight Maryland attack errors. A kill from Fraik put the Terps within three, at 13-10, but Wisconsin went on a 5-0 run to increase its lead, 18-11. A Terrapin attack error gave the Badgers the second match win, 25-17.
The Terps stuck with the Badgers in the third set. Hrebenach made an early kill followed by a service ace from Sam Higginbothem for a 3-1 Maryland lead. Sophomore setter Carlotta Oggioni made two straight service aces as the Terps took a 7-6 lead. Wisconsin took the lead back, but Ashlyn MacGregor and Hrebenach made kills to keep Maryland in the set.
The Badgers pulled away to a 20-14 lead, and while Fraik, Hrebenach and Craigo made kills, Wisconsin took the 25-17 set win, and the match victory, 3-0.
Carlini finished the match with 33 assists and four kills.
Fraik led the match with 10 kills while Oggioni made 13 assists and two service aces. Junior libero Amy Dion made five digs.
The Terps return to College Park next weekend to play Michigan State Friday at Maryland Madness and Michigan Saturday.
