COLLEGE PARK, Md - Jacqui Pascual, Corey Schwartz and Sarah Calta went a combined 7-of-13 at the plate with 5 RBI's to lead the Maryland Softball team to a doubleheader split with George Mason at the Maryland Softball Stadium Friday. The Terrapins were edged 5-4 in game one before a resounding 11-2 victory in the nightcap.
Game Two
Maryland used big first and seventh innings offensively and a stellar combined pitching performance to cruise to an 11-2 victory over George Mason.
The Terps jumped all over the Patriots from the outset as a fielding error and two hit batsman loaded the bases with no outs for Jacqui Pascual. In her first ever home at back, Pascual came through, knocking a two-RBI single to left-center field to put Maryland on top 2-0.
Corey Schwartz continued the early surge with an RBI single. A double steal stretched the score to 4-0.
George Mason responded with a solo home run in the second, but that was the only damage starting pitcher Jaymi Bautista-Geiger would allow.
The Maryland forth inning was very similar to the first as Jacqui Pascual would line a double to center and Corey Schwartz came through again with an RBI single to extend Maryland's lead to 5-1.
The next four innings featured shutdown pitching for Maryland. Brenna Nation and Kaitlyn Schmeiser threw four innings of two-hit ball. George Mason picked up their only run during those four innings due to a Terrapins error in the field.
Maryland was allowed to bat in the bottom of the seventh due to exhibition rules and capitalized with a six-run surge. Destiney Henderson and Juli Strange slammed home run, and doubles by Erin Pronobis and Shannon Bustillos, and singles by Skylynne Ellazar, Bridget Hawvermale, and Sarah Lang pushed Maryland to their best offensive inning of the fall season.
Game One
Kaitlyn Schmeiser struck out eight in three innings of work as Maryland fell to George Mason, 5-4.
Maryland grabbed an early lead as Juli Strange led off with a walk and Sarah Calta laid down a bunt single, drawing an errant George Mason throw which would score Strange. With Calta advancing to third, Erin Pronobis would do her job as she helped Calta home with an RBI groundout.
George Mason would cut Maryland's lead in half in the second with some timely two-out hitting. The Terrapins responded in the bottom half as Bridget Hawvermale blasted her second home run in as many games to make it 3-1. Three consecutive singles by Kaitlyn Schmeiser, Skylynne Ellazar and Sarah Calta extended Maryland's lead to 4-1.
Brenna Nation pitched four effective innings, allowing two runs off five hits while striking out three.
Kaitlyn Schmeiser would relieve her in the fifth and pitch the final three innings, allowing zero earned runs while striking out eight.
The Patriots capitalized on a couple of Maryland mistakes in the fifth to gain a 5-4 lead they would never relinquish.
